Have a slight problem

Well, a while back, I made a box to hold what was then my small set of auger bits....

Not that bad a box, and when you open the lid..

Not too bad.   But, in the year since this was made, I have more than doubled the amount of bits I have to store.   Might be time to build a new box?   Wood supply right now is mainly Pine.    The Problem?

How to arrange almost 30( or more!) bits in one box?     The "box" part isn't a problem, been wanting to do dovetailed boxes again, anyway.   Bits go from the small #4 up to and beyond the #20 sizes, and about every size  in-between.   Maybe make a few "layers"  of sets?    Have a feeling I may have a while to plan one out.    Might as well put the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up back on-line, and see what in can conjure up.   As for the "old" box?

Maybe I can find another use for it.......BTW:  That HUGE bit in the second picture?   It is a Craftsman #22.     Maybe I can take it back to sears, for a new one?

Whatever you comenup with, I am sure it will be a nice project

alternate bodies and shanks to each other...

I would go with multiple boxes.  A box to hold them all would be a bit large and would have to be beefy enough to hold the weight.

deepen the box and add a tray...

30+ augers is Lotta bits and a Lotta weight. How about a drawered box? Similar to a machinest's chest with a lid that drops down to make a small table.

Waiting on TriCare to approve an MRI.     Doc says I do not need a replacement knee.    I seem to have a few torn items inside.     He might just scope it, and clean things out.    Might be back to the shop before the end of the year!    Drawers for bits, inside a chest?     Small chest of drawers for drill bits......hmmm  might be doable....

That sounds much better than I think you were thinking it was going to be. Hopefully the MRI shows only minor things to fix.

Good luck with that knee, Steve.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you Steve.  Hope meds or minor surgery can fix the knee for you.

When I made a case for mine I made it like a briefcase with bits on both sides. Also wanted to keep the brace together and mounted it to the case. I do not have a pic, maybe make one today.

You could use what you have and make another box bottom to match and mount it to the top of this one . Also Stick had a good suggestion, that is the way my forstner bits came in the case.

Go easy on that knee til it's fixed...good luck...

Steve, Definitely protect that knee. I've had both knees replaced. The replacements have kept me mobile, but there is nothing like the originals.

Here is my drill case . The clips over the drill swivel to release the brace. and the case opens the same way.

The inside has routed channels for the bits. Not a complete set just what I got with the brace. Also came with 2 extensions.

I'll see what I can post up about what bits I have to store.......I also have a couple @ 16"  in length.     Might take a BIG box.......

I guess you can just leave as is and send me your surplus...problem solved...

Take care of that knee, Steve. You'll be back in the shop before you know it.

Steve -

Fifty years ago, before I had power tools or a shop, I was meeting with a wood carving group.  I needed a case to carry my carving chisels, so I came up with this...

IMG_0379.JPG

I added some mini-chisels made out of small screw drivers. And the arsenal grew larger with a set of palm chisels , so I added a another layer...

IMG_0380.JPG

Then I added a drawer to accommodate the sharpening stones and a leather strop

And the final package looked like this...

The middle tray does not line up perfectly with the rest of the box, but as I said before, this was before power tools and a shop.
