Old Pallets.jpg

Don't remember if I ever told this story.   A few years ago, I got sent out to "fix" a Restoration Hardware table that had splinters on the top.   Turns out it was a barn door from a Scottish barn, the base was plumbing pipe.  Well, as you could expect, the top was quite weathered and had no finish on it.   I could not do much without destroying that "wonderful patina"   So I took out some Scotch-Brite and buffed the top a little.   When I dusted off the swarf, my cloth was black.   Lady was happy and "just loved the look."    Look, the emperor has no clothes.  Never understand why people are attracted to this stuff.

Because the people on TV tell them it is so retro/cool and they fall for it.  I have a couple old pieces of furniture in my home.  I refinished them because they need to look nice for me to want them in my home.

That makes perfect sense now, I just need to be refinished!

Oh go scrub your face with a Loofah Sponge and rub some baby oil on it.  That's the best it's going to get.:P

Ever see Soylent Green?

yup..

guess we're on the same page...

Went to what was called an "Apple Fest" yesterday.   Several hundred craft booths and a few fair food booths.

About all I could handle of "crud from scrap."

barn wood desk.JPG

Old barn rafters, resawn into something that looks like a desk.   Hutch was scraps of pine, main desk was Sycamore rafters,  2" x 5" by 8-12' long.   Got quite a bit of 3/4" thick stock to work with...This was 6 years ago...or so.   Have since added a finish to the desk part.     Those knobs for the lower drawers?  Bits of Walnut scraps...

Desk is still in use today.   I am sitting here at that desk...

It has seen a few moves over the years.    There is a table just off to the left.    Top was from a single plank of Sycamore, might have been a skirt board.....

plank table.JPG

Plank WAS 13-1/2 " wide, until I had to trim it a bit, for square...

plank top.JPG

With bread board ends.  Just a pile of old barn wood...

Cool Steve. Just like old tools, if that old wood could talk, bet you'd hear some stories wouldn't you? All practical, functional and personal with your own unique story for each piece too.

I assume you have been signing and dating these pieces somewhere? Thanks for sharing.

Just shaking my head.

Let's see...Daughter wanted a Loft bed built for GrandBRAT #5....I bought a few non-treated 4x4s, and a few 2x6s

bed base.JPG

Daughter had a few of these on hand.   I cut two down a bit to get the length needed.    Notched a few 4x4s, and cut them to the height she wanted..

notched posts.JPG

Used one of the "cut-offs" as a bench.   Circular saw for the kerf cuts, BIG framer chisel to clean up.   Ends also used 2x6s to make a "ladder" end.   2x^s were lagged into the sides of the pallets.   Then those were lagged into notches on the 4x4s, as well.   Had to use an Impact gun to drive all the lags.   Lags also had a washer, so I had to counter -bore for that.  Counter-bore was a brace and bit.  After a while..

Flip the whole mess over.JPG

I could assemble one end.   Took another trip down there, to FINALLY get the bed all assembled and ready to go..

corner post.JPG

He can climb up the ends.  His older brother just slid his bed in place under the loft bed.

foot board end.JPG

Safety Rail to keep things from rolling off the mattress,  They used a sheet to cover the pallet base.

Bed doesn't even move, while the 7 yr old rolls around up there.  Just another use for pallets...

Shaking my head ,with my eyes closed................... Kids love that kind of furniture.

And, has already survived three moves.    She seems to move a few times a year.   needs stuff that is rugged enough, yet won't break the bank for her.   Whatever makes them happy, I guess.

After my second trip to Week End With Wood I stopped by West End Salvage in DesMoines.  They used to have one of those reality shows on TV.  Their shop was in a four floor wear house in an old down town area. The first floor was full of projects they had built then the upper levels had all kinds of stuff they had salvaged and had yet to find a use for. Some of the stuff they had built was really imaginative and then some of it was recycled crud.  I ran into one of the owners who was a regular on the show and he showed me some of the projects they had featured in different episodes.  He was a real nice guy and even knowing I wasnt going to buy anything had no problem showing me around. He did try and sell me a big antique bandsaw that they had just bought and hadnt repurposed yet.  The thing was huge it had 3ft wheels on it and a huge cast iron frame.  My little dodge truck couldnt have even carried it home.
