Made a trip to Aldis today

Kind of a weakness of mine...cheap food, and tool sales.....They had a set of saws, on sale, for $6.99, + tax......Decided to at least try them out, after all, not like they are the EXPENSIVE kind of saws..

three pack.JPG

Just the way they package their stuff, half in english, half in spanish,  That "logo on the handle...."Tested & Certified" "in Germany".  Modern saws....Made in China, tested and certified in Germany..

Crosscut panel saw, a backsaw that might work for dovetails, and a Drywall saw.  Each with their own blade protector...

These also have a 3 yr warrantee....I just got these out of the plastic package, haven't tried them out..yet.  Drywall saw is a bit late, as I already have done a bunch of that sort of work.

Aldis I was in had two boxes of saws,...hacksaws, a single hand saw and these.   There was two left, and I had to dig into the second box to find this set...we'll see later how they do....I am only out $7 anyway,....

BTW: the addy in Germany for these saws?  Ovibell GmbH & Co.  KG,   Steineshofffweg 2,   D-45479 Mulheim an der Ruhr.

We have that store here but I never realized they sold tools! Might have to go along with Mimi when she shops for groceries!

I tried out the backsaw.....a bit hard to start, cuts real fast once it gets going.   Seems to cut as straight as the operator  can saw ( I'm not the greatest at that)  Teeth are wicked.....sharp and mean to look at, almost like a Japanese saw.   But cuts on the push stroke.

Will see how the Panel saw does later today....may see IF it can cut as a rip saw as well as a cross cut saw.

Drywall saw is put up, out of the way.   Hoping I don't have a NEED for it.   Not exactly set up for keyhole saw  cuts...would need a different handle.

Still...for $7 and change, and a 3 year Warranty....I am not out that much.    These seem to be more for a Carpenter than a Cabinetmaker.    At the least, it will save my better saws from a bit of wear and tear on the recycled wood I tend to bring home.

There WAS a "Nest of Saws"  and a Hacksaw set there as well.   The nest had a plastic mitre box.    There were pruning tools in another box.   A sledge hammer with a fibreglass handle ( 8maybe 10 pound)  was $19.99 + tax......didn't need one.

Aldi's Tool Sales tend to sell out very quickly....

Who knew...can't say I've ever noticed the "tool isle" at Aldi's near us...sounds like they worked out OK for you Steven? I'll keep filed away you have a dry-wall saw that needs broken in; I'll hold off until the knee gets healed up though. :P

Add these to your "Loaners" tool kit?

Beat the "H" out of loaning out my 140 yr. old Disston No. 7, don't it?

Trim out a doorway, with that "plastic molding" the BORG sells nowadays.......my Vintage #4 backsaw isn't going anywhere near that stuff..

Build a deck?    IF I need a handsaw to help fine tune a few cuts......it will be the Aldis saws cutting into that treated lumber,  not my  D-23 crosscut saws.

At least the handle on the Aldi saw feels better than the Black plastic "thing" shaped like a handle on the Sears Craftsman saw....blister-maker.

Of course, there are rumours of people paying almost $300 for a simple Framing Square.....simply because it is sold by Woodpecker's.....

I don't lend tools.  Too many come back damaged.

Borrower:

  • Didn't realize they did the damage
  • Realized they did damage and feels bad, sometimes bad enough to pay for replace/repair and resents it
  • Thought it was about to break anyway, they only...

I'd be glad to help, but don't ask to borrow tools.

Mechanics tools...I keep my Craftsman, S&K, and Protos IN my tool box......I will loan out the OddLots toolsets. and other cheap tools.    When I was working at Plastipak...I kept my best tools at home.    had a habit of leaving the rollaround open at work, in case I needed something FAST.    Too many people were walking past the lines I was working at.

Proto Channel lock pliers?    Safely at home......new in wrapper Fat Max pair?    laying in the top of the tool box.

Son has his own tools.   Grandsons may need a tool for their own use....loaner is a oddlots.   IF it comes back, fine, if not, not out much.

Got the 4 piece setof chisels last year from Aldis, the same set that Sellers raves about.  About the same price as the saws this year. Only the 8mm had problems, in about a year of HARD use.  I just sharpened it back up last night.   Might be good for another year?    They have been good enough that a lot of my other chisels have been "retired".  Might have a set of yellow handle chisels on Fleabay this weekend....

The Aldi's crosscut saw can be a saw to break down large items before I haul them down to the shop.    Less noise than the circular saws, and I don't have to set up  an "E" cord.

I have had no luck finding any tools in the Aldi stores near me.  I was going to check out the chisels if I could find them.  Doesnt hurt as much to rough up an inexpensive modern tool for rough stuff.
