A couple old saws that I found

Featured Replies

Turned out very nice even with the stain...wonder if a Coke was spilled on it at some point? The handle looks great. Thanks for showing.

I am amazed how well you cleaned that saw up.  Looks great especially after seeing the before picture.

If I could give more than one "like", I sure would!

I love those saws and great that you see the beauty in them through the rust. Many people just count them out at this point as you could see when they sold them for a buck a piece. Can't wait to see the refurb you do on them. I'm sure they will have a new life for a long time. It took me a long time to be able to see past the rust and see the potential of the tool.

I have fond that Sometimes the rust will surprise!  If the price is right, I often will gamble.  I just hate to see the old ones die.  Sometimes it is over but sometimes the returns are quite rewarding.  Looks like at least one of these has turned out to be reward.  The other may be tougher.  It remains to be seen.

Nice job! It looks great and it was saved. That handle is awesome. Really brought it out nicely.

Got a day off for weather so the Spear and Jackson got cleaned today.  Same process basically as the Atkins last weekend.  The handle turned out a little dark but was so weathered and dry and it took BLO like a sponge.  I am OK with the way it turned out.  The split nuts all came apart fine and I found lead shims under a couple of them, apparently original, and most likely to improve fit and finish when the saw was made.  I will file this old ripper soon but shop time was short today.  Anyone know of a good way to date this saw?  I know its an oldie because of the lambs tongue handle and split nuts but would like to know just how old.

I also did this one this morning.  My wifes uncle expressed interest in a backsaw for general work so I may be passing this one to him. Nothing fancy here.  No mfg marks or medallion on this one so no idea who made it.  It filed tough enough for me to believe the steel is decent.
