September 15, 20169 yr comment_74268 Have had this piece on my bench for a while. It is spaulted Chinese tallow . I just got another air brush from HF with finer control. It was perfect for this. Used Chestnut Stains in red, royal blue and yellow. In this pic finish is nog quite done. Report

September 16, 20169 yr Author comment_74475 Thanks for the comments. The finish is Deft Lacquer satin finish brush on , applied with airbrush. I have stopped using sanding sealer as Flexner says it is only to make sanding easier and if you have a well sanded finish there is no need and sanding sealer causes the finish to be softer . By the way I read something on Wm Young Proboards about lacquer and it worked, except he uses shellac for sealer. When applying the finish if you get orange peal then you did not apply enough finish , if you get runs you applied too much. Had a spot that looked like orange peal so kept applying till smooth. Also using the airbrush gets a finer film and less likely to get runs. Report

September 16, 20169 yr comment_74547 I would love to be able to color like this but have no way of doing it, except by hand staining.. I do sit and stare in amazement at those that can though.. Report
September 17, 20169 yr comment_74620 That looks great. Never heard of that wood. How did you get something so unusual? Report

Also called "popcorn tree" . Is somewhat a junk tree. They have white blossums in the spring which lead to many many seeds . So they sprout in all the flower beds. Has a moderatly white wood in most cases, but with the right minerals in the soil will have deep browns in the wood. Spalts fairly easily and turns well when green. Thanks for the comments Report
