Bass wood

Featured Replies

I am turning some Bass wood today. I found an old piece and wondered what it would be like to turn. Well, as you would guess, it turns very easy. It would also be easy to go to far. I put some paint on,  natural is not an option.  I'll post a picture tomorrow (if it turns out good)

Ever turn Bass wood?

Never turned it but did do a feeble attempt at carving once. It was an automata type toy. I think the plans were in the Woodcraft Magazine. Turn the handle and Santa does lifts.

Nice!

Never had a piece of Basswood.  There is a tree next door that has the most beautiful shape.  It is at the edge of the yard where it can enjoy the sun for most of the day.  While the last neighbor lived there he kept the lower limbs trimmed up so he could cut the weeds under it.  The house is a repo now and in five years the lower limbs now touch the ground.  The top has a perfect dome shape.  I had been trying to figure out what it was and finally a couple of months ago I discovered it is a Linden tree also known as Lime or Basswood.  I may have to go back and trim a branch off.

Lew, I like your automata toy.
