August 29, 20169 yr This may not be worth the effort, or even doable, but here goes. There is a return to topic listing button at the end of each thread, but some of these threads get kind of long. I have been on some websites, mostly shopping sites, that have a "floating" button that always stays in view, usually to chat with a sales rep. A similar function would be handy here to keep from having to scroll to the bottom of the screen. I know, sounds kind of lazy, but it would be cool too.
August 29, 20169 yr Agreed. There's an arrow on my screen that takes you back to the top. Maybe one to take the reader to the last post??
August 29, 20169 yr TIP: Page up or page down will take you to the beginning or end of a thread page.
August 29, 20169 yr Tom, the double carrets on the left as circled in red will take you to the first topic of the discussion, and the single white arrow on the right circled in red, will take you to page top. Does this help?
August 29, 20169 yr We could also shorten up the posts per topic page count, currently we have it set to 25 per page, we could shorten it to 15 whatever number is reasonable so there are not so many posts on one page.

Does this help? John, I'm not seeing that blue bar anywhere except in your post. Is that something else only visible to administrators? I think everyone might have missed my intent. The suggestions I am reading, (and thank you for these, as they are also valuable,) are for navigating around the current page. I was looking for a way to quickly switch back to the topic listing, or index, without having to scroll to the bottom of the page to access the button, or carret, for this function. This isn't a big deal, I was just going for another "bell and whistle" for the website. Thanks for considering the idea.
August 31, 20169 yr Got it Tom, I missed the boat on this one! 3 hours ago, PostalTom said: John, I'm not seeing that blue bar anywhere except in your post. Is that something else only visible to administrators? You won't see the blue bar in this topic, because we have not reached the 25 post threshold yet, once you reach 26 posts in a topic, then the blue bar appears for a page navigator. See this discussion and let me know if you see the blue bar at thepatriotwoodworker.com/topic/17413-good-monday-morning-patriot-woodworkers-august-29-2016/ Now, back to your actual intent which I missed, sorry about that. Give me a couple days and I'll see what I can come up with, I like the idea being able to jump back to the topic listings a forum. I'll check back in with my findings, thanks Tom! PS, I am seriously considering going to back to 15 posts per page in a topic, because the long page of 25 posts, gets pretty long.
August 31, 20169 yr Ok Tom, I just put together a little pathway to accomplish what you want, in a round about back door way, this is only for the interim until we can zero in on a one step process to get you to the topic lists. But for now, perhaps this will help what you want to accomplish, and used separately these tools are kind of neat as well. In every post now, there is a "Go to Top" dialogue, click on it. Then, once at the top, click on "Jump To" or you can click on the (in this case) "General Woodworking" breadcrumb at the left to be taken back to the General Woodworking Forum. You'll also see the "Jump To" at the bottom of each page as well. Then chose the forum you would like to "Jump To" I know this still kind of the same as what we had before, but you have a few more choices how to get where you want to be, at least now with the "Go to Top" in each post, you don't need to scroll anymore. Do not ever feel like your asking too much around here, it's suggestions like these that really provoke us to look at our community features and if there is room for improvement. In this case, I think it would be wonderful if we had a "Back to Topic Lists" from a floater button, give me some time and I'll see what I can dig up. Thanks Tom!
August 31, 20169 yr Author Thanks John. It feels good to be taken seriously instead of given reasons why not. The go to top, and jump to functions, even by themselves, are a good improvement.
September 2, 20169 yr Author After 41 years married, 2 kids, 7 grandkids, and 4 great grandkids, patience, aka "silent suffering", comes easily.
September 8, 20169 yr When you reply to a topic you end up at the bottom and can use the go to topic listing button. If you don't reply the back button will take you back to the topic listing from anywhere on the page.

When I select a forum to "Jump To", I sit waiting for a few seconds for the forum to come up, until I realize I forgot to click the "Go" button. Again. Is there any way to have the "go" implied when I select the forum I want? The problem is not that I resent having to make one more click, far from that, I just forget, since so many other websites with similar functions don't need a separate click. Thanks.

Tom, thanks so much for your feedback. The "Jump To" action is only temporary. Actually the "Go to top" and the "Jump To" actions were both meant to be a temporary fix till we get something developed more inline with the original suggestion. But after experiencing the "Go to top" action, I think we'll keep that one, it's a nice feature, but I am not happy with the "Jump To" action either. What I did add, is the two up and down arrows to the lower right of our site. Those are in view always. What we are working on to accompany those up and down arrows, is a menu icon that will sit between the arrow boxes, you will be able to click on that menu icon, and choose your forum, and you will be whisked away to that forum. So for now, we don't really plan on putting too much energy into the "Jump To" action, as it is only for the interim. We are trying to accommodate your original suggestion as close as possible, and integrating the forum choices into the up and down arrows, I feel is a move in the right direction. Are we good?

Absolutely. Every change has added to the functionality of the site. Perhaps when all the upgrades are incorporated, one of the menu choices could be a navigation tutorial, readily available.
