Some two piece tops

Featured Replies

Fun to do and fun to play with. Shafts are all maple, bodies are spalted beech or corian.

Nice ones Steve.  Do the Corian tops spin longer being they are heavier?

Thanks Dan! A lot longer . Actually, that's one of the reasons they are as small as they are, they have so much mass it's hard to spin them if they're much bigger.

Nice!

What adhesive do you use to cement the two different media together?

Thanks Lew! For the corian ones I use medium or thick super glue depending how tight I get the tenon, no accelerator. For the wooden ones I like Aleen's  tacky glue because it grabs so quickly.

Thanks for the information. I have never heard of Aleen's Tacky Glue.

Funny thing, until fairly recently, neither had I and you can get it pretty much anywhere. I buy it at Walmart but I've seen it in the hardware and even in a grocery store.

I like the look of the corian. Can it be embellished like wood with sorby spirals ?

I really like those. Great turnings

Over the years I've been lucky to get some outstanding spalted wood. The reason was that my shop in OH was heated by wood. I'd examine each piece of firewood before I tossed it in the fire. I got a lot  of spalted apple, some walnut and the red is Box Elder. My neighbor and mentor was 85 and a life long wood worker. He knew his wood and was very happy to tell me about what wood I brought to him

I have more pictures I can share.

I meant for this posting to be  "turning"  entry,  however my intentions were good, but my actions were not

Thanks Gerald, I have never tried to texture corian, It's hard enough but it may too brittle. I'll give it a go on the next batch and see what happens.
