August 23, 20169 yr In spite of itself. I had trimmed the lid parts.. Still ugly. Set this aside, for now. I took the pine panel out of the clamps, trimmed it to size, length wize needed squared, width was a 1/8" too wide. Laid the panel on the bench, and clamped it in place... Meh, still needs a bit more. Plane is a Stanley #4, Type 13. Iron even has the "SW" on it. Gave it a bit more work.. The other face was a bit worse. I used the Millers Falls #11 to flatten the face, before the #4 took over. There was one edge that was a bit wavy, though.. Since the #4 was handy, gave it a little extra work. Needed a straight edge for the next plane to work... I figured I could use this new cutter for the #45......wrong, this cutter does NOT fit MY plane. Sooo. I dug out a narrower cutter, 3/16" instead of the too wide 1/4" ones. At least the skates will sit where they need to be It will have to do....the 45 does NOT like knots being in the way,either.. meh...At least I can bury that spot... Test fitted. Due to the length of the panel, I won't need to do this sort of thing to the ends. Test fitted all four sides.. Leaves some room for expansion. Well, that will do for the 45, for now. Time to pack it away until needed again.. Have to wait until the Laundry is done, before I'm allowed to make any more messes.....Igor, clean up in Aisle #1!!! August 24, 20169 yr Author Ok, Laundry is out of the basement, I can go back to work.....Ends of the bottom panel needed a little plane work done.. Wasn't all that big. The plane was made by Millers Falls for Sears, sold as a Craftsman. The square was to check for any dippity=dos...Plane across end grain.. Looks good from my house... Panel also had a few high spots in the face grain....had, because I planed those flat , as well. Did a little trimming on the box's sides for a better fit. Might as well get the clamps and glue out LOT of clamps.. Almost had enough. Tried for square.....but the right side has a curve to it. Diagonals looked good. When this mess finally is out of the forest of clamps, I plane that side flat. Along with all the other sides, and corners. Maybe then, I can get the bench cleared off, as I have a lid to work on. I now have a panel to mill up, for the lid To be part of a frame&panel lid. Might need a little plane work?
August 24, 20169 yr That's going to be a sweet plane box. So, Igor got too much sun, eh. You didn't make him fold the laundry, did you? Edited August 24, 20169 yr by Gene Howe
August 24, 20169 yr Author I'm not even allowed to do that! Boss' orders. I think Igor eloped with the Brown Bat.....
August 24, 20169 yr Author Box is out of the clamps! Film @ 2300 hrs, ZULU! Turned out I needed to sharpen a plane's iron, too.......Switched to a sharper one, while I was at it. Nice to have "spare planes" just sitting around, waiting for work.... All pilled up, with my daily 5 pills. Happens when ya get old....aches, pains, and pills... Two long sides have been planed, holes filled, sanded the sawdust & glue filler, and planed it again.....started on the one end, then Lunch...happened. Might mosey back down there in a bit...
