A vase that I liked a lot

Featured Replies

I used some spalted Apple, yellow hart and Paduk to make this one. I am not good enough to hollow it out, but neither was the spalted Apple. I was worried that it would not hold up when I was turning it. My wife said this was a keeper. My daughter took one look and said, "Dad, I love this one" my wife nodded and I gave it to her.Ringed vase 003.jpg

Ron, the color is amazing, the spalted marks are really cool, honestly, I am not a turner, I am amazed how turners hollow these vessels out. Seems nerve racking to me. Beautiful choice in woods and colors!

Hello Ron. I am new member here but looks like I am going to like this woodturning forum. Very nice project.

Definitely a keeper.  I really like the shape of it and the spalted Apple is wonderful.

Love this piece . On the black lines ......is that veneer? At the AAW Sym in June I saw that (veneer ) in platters.

That is a beautiful vase! Thank you for sharing

No veneer, the black is wire burns. Never even heard of using veneer on a turned piece.

Ron it is part of the glue up and you can use colored veneer to give color highlights too. The demo at AAW was done by Frank Penta from Chapel Hills,NC. This shot is not very good but shows the veneer clearly in several places.

Gerald, I am having a "Duh" moment right now, can you point out the veneered areas of that bowl? I am so cornfuded!

It is a beautiful bowl, veneers and all, I am just trying to imagine how veneers get turned without burning through them or destroying them all together.

The dark lines are veneer, but look at the out of focus piece on the left. See the green , red ,brown and other colors? About the size of a pencil lead all those are veneer. This is done by lamination and he does a lot of platters .
