August 14, 20169 yr Spent the last three days, a few sales here and there. Thursday was a single sale. A cheap, 1/4" drive ratcket, with a socket attached..quarter for it. I did spend another fifty cents on a tool kit.. Called a Leatherman Wave. 16 tools in one. Then on Friday, made another stop at a sale.....picked a decent tack hammer and these two thingys That is a 11ppi Disston Panel saw on top. 20" long Might take a little cleaning up? The other saw is 26" long, and is a 9 ppi. But...NOT a Disston.. Yes that is an Eagle, with a green background. Wide rim is stamped "Better Merchandise" Really? The "medallion " is not a bolt, there is no through hole under it. Might take a bit to clean this one one, too? As for the hammer.. Sitting there to the right of Saturday's finds. $5 PEXTO block plane, a 1/2 price screwdriver and a 1/2 price drill. Pexto was stamped into the iron... Says "Made in USA" on the heel. Screwdriver matched a few others I have...quarter for it. The drill? Well, instead of a wooden cap, this had a two-piece metal "lid". You rotated the inside lid, and a hole appeared. And, one at a time, 6 bits came out. More or less shake them out till you get the size you needed. Otherwise, just your normal $10 eggbeater. I guess I was paying for the bits, as well. Stopped at another sale, and picked a new-in-bag, Sunbrella brand cushion for the Pine 4x4 rocker. I also stopped by a BORG and bought a new bandsaw blade, as the one I have is getting a bit dull. Haven't found any names on the drill. Had to "set" the hammer head a bit, as it was loose. Nothing much to write home about.....
August 15, 20169 yr Bandit, you're gonna have to build a shed just for egg beater drills. That's if there are any left in Ohio. Nice finds, my friend.
August 17, 20169 yr Author Well, at least I was able to clean up the shorter of the two saws today....about all the back will allow.. Lots of pitting going on. Teeth need sharpened up. Saw is a 10ppi, 20" long Panel saw. According to the medallion, this was made between 1953 and 55....sometime before HK Porter bought out Disston. I had to replace one stripped out bolt. have a second bolt almost stripped, but holding, for now. Handle has been sanded down, and refinished with one coat of Witch's Brew..for now. Might get a second coat tomorrow... just a $3 saw....
August 17, 20169 yr Author By barely a trace of an etch....all I could find was the right hand side of the Keystone's outline. The "0" is part of a "10" Disston stamped into plates to mark how many teeth a saw was sharpened to. In this case, this is a 10ppi. Handle looked almost like a dog had started to chew on it....Plate has a small kink out at the toe. Those three "white" markings down there are my fingerprints..... Need a file of the right size...then I can get out the Wentworth No.1 Saw Vise, and sharpen this saw up.
August 17, 20169 yr Author Ok, now IF the creek is done going across the floor of the shop, AND my back starts to settle down a bit.....maybe I can get the other saw cleaned up......not sure WHAT I'll do about that Eagle thingy, yet. Saw MIGHT have been a Disston made saw? Then branded as a Hardware Company's saw? Disston would do special orders like that, but so would Atkins. Will know more once all that rust is taken away....100 grit under a palmsander usually works.
August 18, 20169 yr Nice find Steve! Looking at all those wonderful finds you have there, the one that jumped out at me was the cool looking straight slot driver with the wood notched handle, dad used to have a whole set of those around. Brings back memories.
August 18, 20169 yr Author My Dad was a bit hard on his.....we'd get him a new set of those screwdrivers every couple of years..... Between the Stanley style wood handled ones and these square handled ones, I almost got two complete sets. Second saw was sanded clean today. What looked like bolts turned out to be rivets. Handle stay in place. It was also sanded a bit. Had to be careful around the carvings. Plate does have a jink about 3-4" back from the toe.....may turn this saw into a kink-free Panel saw.... May bend the cut off part a bit, drill a couple holes, and make it into a planing stop for the bench. Back is still hurting, Spinal Stenosis Lumbar has flared up BIG time. Goes right down the right leg, too. Walking around like Chester..
