Playing with some $1 Walnut

Featured Replies

Decided to at least get them milled down a bit.    One edge has been jointed

The plane is a Stanley No. 7c, type 9.   For some reason, it looks a bit tiny....edge of the board is 1-1/8" wide, by....

50-1/2" long.   Wider end is about..16"....The $1 slab of walnut does have a bit of cupping going on, though..

So, I might as well rip right down the center.   Then surface all four edges.    There is a slight bow along the length, might make a cut across the middle, as well.

I did try out a Junior Jack on that edge....

Might have set it a wee bit deep?    It looks very small, sitting on the edge...

Plane is a Millers Falls No. 11.     When I get back down to the shop, I'll start cutting this thing into a few pieces I can use.....One of two planks I picked for a $1 each....

I like the price Steve, even if it is cupped, there is plenty of great walnut that can be used for all sorts of projects. A dollar well spent.

Awesome piece of Walnut and for a $1.00, wow!!

Going to be a few days before I can do anything more in the shop.  Wrong meds last weekend built up to a "heart attack" like  symptoms.....Wound up getting a heart catherization done  wednesday.   Got home yesterday.    Very sore, and very restricted as to how much I can do right now.   No stairs means no shop time, same with no lifting, or driving.   Have to wait on the hole in the leg to heal.

Always something....been a bad year...

Take it easy. Shop time can wait. Your recovery is the most important thing.

A big DITTO.

Not too sure that slab IS Walnut......did a clean up, and resaw of a few boards.....looks more like .....Cherry.

S4S.JPG

Surfaced all four sides.   Wanted it square for a reason...

resawn.JPG

1/2" thick  to make a Book Matched pair...

book matched.JPG

There are the black inclusions, like cherry.   The bandsaw  smoked the shop up, with a NON-tannin smell.....more like a bunrt Cherry pie...

fake figure.JPG

Yep, Fake Figure.   More of where the sawmill went.    Once I had smooth planed it down.....rather plain grain.     But it is a red colour.   Well, one down three to go..

So, it would seem I have about..5 bf of Black Cherry sitting here.   That I spent a dollar bill on.  As soon as the Dungeon Shop dries out again, and a Brown Bat quits flying Air Patrols overhead, I might make something out of these things...

Bat annihilator??

I recently had a chunk of really dense unknown wood. It wasn't until I cut it that the "aroma" told me it was cherry.

Well, second board has been S4S, and resawn...

cherry blanks.JPG

A little shorter.  With a few shavings laying around.   Yep there is a crack in the one.   Might have to work around that, or just glue it back in place.  Both panels are about 8" wide..

measured widths.JPG

Still have two more boards to work over....Can't wait to see what they will look like....and..they are 6" wide.....5 bf for a dollar bill, of Cherry.  Not too bad?

Are those machining waves in there Steve, or is there some figure in that thar lumber!

  • Author

A little of both.    And, IF I let them sit out like this too long, they redden right up.   There isn't any machining, other than the bandsaw, and the handplanes...Need to find my bottle of Elmer's, and make a couple panels out of these....

Need to bring in the other slab...been leaning up against the house since I brought it home..debate is now where to crosscut that 7' long chunk to where I can work with it.   Lots of live edge and a couple BIG knots going on.    Might be a bit rough to resaw down from the 8/4"  thickness.     Maybe rip the live edge off, and reuse elsewhere?   Then I could resaw the slab a bit thinner?   Maybe more book matching?

The first two slabs?   Thinking either a finger jointed box and lids?   Maybe set them outside in the sunshine for a day....once it ever stops raining.

Well, that didn't go too well......New blade in the bandsaw....1/4" wide one does not play nice, even brand new.    May just use what is already milled and planed flat as a start on a box.....I can use the wavy stuff as filler.  Cut those down a bit, to make using them a bit easier.     Found an old piece of Cherry I've had in the shop for a long time......colour and grain matches this new stuff

Let's see...slab was just over 5 board feet, spent a dollar bill on it.  so.....about $0.20 a board foot?  I can't get too worked up about a few miss guided cuts.   Will have to see what the 7 footer will yield, as well.  Maybe a stand of some sort?

Bandsaw blade was even shedding a tooth or two.....May have to go back and buy the 1/2" wide one, after all....

Some really nice looking grain in the walnut. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
