A couple of years ago my small plum tree died. I salvaged what looked good. I turned it down to this new Christmas ornament. It is long, about 9 inches. Kinda reminded me of an icicle. I was surprised at the beauty in the piece.

Yes, except for the yellow tip. It had some sort of dark knot in the top, maybe where a branch started and got trimmed off when it was young. I had to make

something out it, it was too nice to toss. The deeper I went, the better it looked.

That's awesome! Did you use a steady rest while turning?

 

No, but I was very careful. I have turned crochet needles down to one eight inch and used my fingers as a steady rest. Tricky, but I saw it on youtube and if he can do it, I had to try.

I've tried the finger method- it Burns! Lately, I've been trying a welding glove. It fits really loose so if it catches, I'm hoping it will pull off of my hand.

That is some beautiful wood Ron, I love it. I had a fruitless plum that died a few years back, I still have the logs that are air drying. I may have to cut it up and get into it.

The most beautiful wood I have ever gotten into was a Chinese ornamental dwarf tree. Never got the name, but all of its branches drooped down like a weeping willow. It had a swirling pattern of black, yellow, brown and even some  tinges of orange.
