sanding discs

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any experience with the hand held sanding discs that turn with the lathe? I don't know what you call it, but it has a handle and a foam disc with sandpaper on it.

How about the discs that you can use in a hand held drill that can turn opposite the direction of the lathe?

Thanks

When and how do you use it? Roughing, final smoothing or all of the above? Are you satisfied with your reuslts?

Thanks

I use my corded hand drill. Mostly I use this system for sanding bowls- inside and out. My only complaint is the cost of the discs other than that, it works well for me. I just work up thru the grits. Depending on the wood condition (tear-out, etc), I may start with 80 grit.  My lathe doesn't have a reverse function which is supposed to make sanding easier.

For my rolling pins, I just use my random orbital sander

I think you can purchase the "holder" separately and then add just the sanding discs you need- rather than buy the "kit". Tha's how I got mine at the local Woodcraft store.

Lew, does Supergrit have anything in their vast supply?

I think they are over rated and hugely expen-O-licious.   I use an air powered drill and the discs that welders use that turn on and off the  pad with a 1/4 turn.  I had been using the  PSA backed ones and had "issues" with them.

Last time I was there (month or so ago)I asked. The owner said they did not carry them. He didn't say if they were going to do so in the future.

They look pretty neat, Cliff. The Wavey System has a soft foam pad that contours to the shape of a turning- especially on the inside of a bowl.
