Beetle kill Pine Table

Featured Replies

I got some more of the Pine wood killed by the Pine beetle. I wanted to see what would look like if the table was 100% Pine kill,

This wood seems to be lighter and softer than regular pine. Maybe it was old or maybe it was just me (I'm old)  It came out nice

and looks good, however I wonder about the strength of this wood. I don't think I'd want it anywhere that would support a load.

I took the picture in the sun and you can all the color in the top, but the sun kind of washed out the color on the legs.

Outstanding Ron! You sure are getting some great use from that beetle kill. Nice table, very minimalist, functional, and a great addition to any room. I like the shades in that pine.I have a dumb question, is there anything that can be seen in that table, where folks in the know would say, oh ya, that's made from beetle kill. Is the dark shades, or something else? Or just the fact that is was cut down by forest management because of beetle kill that makes it so? Thanks Ron, just looking for some education on this.

They call it Blue Pine because of it has a blue/green coloring. Then there is a notation about it and the Pine Beetle. As the disease progresses, the wood color darkens and looks like my table.

I'm not sure who does the cutting, but I'm sure the trees must meet specs. I get it at Home Depot and it is mostly used in siding and floors for homes. I don't think I'd use it for anything that you would want to last long. It is light and soft. It almost feels  like a pithy wood.  Fun to use, but very soft.

Love insect killed wood.  Has some interesting graining.  I have seen some that has a very pronounced blue tint to it.  Very nice table.  Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thanks for the education on that Ron. Great information, also, the legs, did you slot them in or just screw them to the base?

David S, the blue would look really neat, gotta see some in action.

I used a dowel to attach it to the center and 4 forty five degree supports. It is only 16 x 16 and that should do it
