Hi gang I wanted to let you all see the new addition to the addiction, called tools and woodworking.

This miter saw is from Harbor Freight. I paid less than $100 for the saw itself, $78 I think it was, which is the lowest price I had ever seen for one.

I got the saw, a blade and a extended warranty (one year extension), all for a total of $136. That is about the same as I paid for the grinder which sits to the left.

I am waiting on the blade to come in, for some reason they didn't come together (go figure).

This is what I have been wanting/needing since I can't fit a table saw in here, so that I can make perfect straight or angled cuts, and make my turnings more complex and fun.

I will have to drill a few holes and anchor it before I use it. :)

Next on my list, a router. Gosh I need a bigger place LOL.

Thanks for looking and have a great day.100_0498.thumb.JPG.ade49aff5d005b6c1b86c

Good for you, Charles.

Make sure you get a good blade. Freuds are nice. Get one specifically for a miter saw. I use an 80 tooth and a 60.

Thanks guys, I didn't know there was a blade specifically for a miter saw. I got one that said it was for a table saw because that is all I could find on the site, but it is a titanium coated blade.

Charles, the blade for the miter saw has a vastly different hook angle. For instance a table saw rip blade will have a 20 degree hook and a miter saw blade will have a -5 degree hook.

It's really not safe to use a blade designed for the T/S in a M/S. The more aggressive T/S blade will want to pull the work and possible climb on you. On a sliding miter saw, it's very scary. DAMHIK!

Congrats on the new tool! It will make your life much easier.

As for the blades, Gene is correct in that there are table saw specific blades with a different degree of hook and should not be used on a miter/chop saw. What you want to look for is a blade that is miter saw specific or is rated for both miter and table saw as the degree of hook will be different. For decent quality blades that won't break the bank I would look to Home Depot/Lowe's and the "Freud Diablo 10" Miter/Table Saw" blades (I am assuming that your miter saw is 10" as opposed to 12"). They are a thinner kerf and have good longevity and can be resharpened a time or 2 as well by a local sharpening service as long as the teeth are not broken. They come in 3 different tooth configurations at 40, 60 and 80 teeth. The 40 is for rougher wood like 2x4's and plywood and such for more framing/building use. The 60 is fine finish for most hardwoods and the 80 is for very fine finish. At Home Depot online they run $30 for the 40 tooth, $40 for the 60 tooth and $55 for the 80 tooth in the 10". I have used a number of different blades on my Dewalt 12" Miter and the Freud Diablos have worked great for me.

Thanks for the info. If I can't see that it says I can use it for this saw, I will simply return it and get something else, maybe somewhere else.

You are correct Allen, in assuming it is a 10". I wanted 12", as it would do EVERYTHING I ever needed. but the 10 is close enough, especially for the price.

Yea I was amazed at the prices for the blades, but considering the blade would probably last me more than a year, it would be an acceptable expense, even if i did get a 60 or 80 tooth blade (this one is 40).

Thanks again guys for the input, I didn't know there was chop saw specific blades. I guess that's what happens when you don't grow up around a woodworker :), My stepfather felled trees for a living, but never got into the milling portion of the field.

Oh FYI this one isn't a sliding one, I wanted that but really just couldn't afford it.

Man Charles that is a nice addition. That should be a nice fit with your other tools. I know you are ready to get it running. Look forward to seeing the work you will be able to produce.

  • 1 month later...

Did you get it up and running Charles?

Yessir I sure did, and it is currently using the first blade I got. I just simply turned it around and it works great.

I think this is why they done away with RAS. People was putting the wrong blades on them. They can get real aggressive with the wrong pitch.

That’s true, and thanks for the input. 😊
