December 24, 201510 yr A firend sent me a box, with two old wooden planes inside. Since the tables are done(for now...) decided to at least rehab one of them. Picked the one with the "good" handle to do. Handle is still in the colour that the rest of the plane used to be. Cleaned the old finish off the rest. Iron and chipbreaker were cleaned of rustiness, and tuned up. Chipbreaker is stamped as a W. Butcher.. the iron has some different names on it. DWIGHT S&E?? Sharpened up with a slight camber. Handle is a tad loose. Test drive on some wihte oak.. Nice when the shavings just fly up out of there. There was a slight problem....first push along the oak, I get stuck by a splinter from the plane! It stayed with the plane....until a block plane came along and removed the problem area. The second jack plane will wait until after the Holidays....needs a new handle made....2 pounds of black tape do not a handle make. It's iron says it is from Auburn NY. Thistle Brand. Need to get a finish on the wood bodies...sometime. A nice "Merry Christmas" from HamS along the Wahbash......
