September 1, 201510 yr Popular Post I stopped at a flea market on the way to work this morning. I know it is really getting bad when I stop before work, but I was looking to see if they had any local honey. While looking around I saw this four fold ruler in a display box and ask the guy if I could look at it. After examining it and acting non-interested and handing it back to him I ask what he wanted. He said 5.00. I ho hummed around a few minutes and said I guess I will take it for 5.00. So here is the story on this nice four fold ruler. This is a square joint, full bound in brass ruler. Between 1879 and 1898 the marking on the boxwood rulers had changed. On the outside was now the name STANLEY in 5/32" letters and to the right of the name was the ruler number. On the inside of the Boxwood rules, the logo has also standardized. The company name would be o two lines on the upper leg and the factory name would be in two lines on the lower leg. The WARRANTED BOXWOOD would be split between the two legs and to the right of the company name. The letter size was changed to 3/32". This marking was used on the boxwood rulers until the merger which changed the logo to the Stanley "Sweet Heart" logo in 1921. Here is an illustration of the Stanley No 62 from the Book "Boxwood and Ivory" by Philip Stanley. The Stanley No.62 was discontinued in 1942 and not brought back. This was an unexpected find but a nice one indeed. Patriot Picking....

Welcome by the way! But as far as info, you pretty much have it. It's a Stanley, it's a ruler. 😊 What kind of info would you like? That'll help us narrow down our research too. Thanks Garry!
November 18, 20214 yr Actually, John Moody in his original topic here, put up some pretty good info as well.

November 19, 20214 yr Popular Post I wonder how his right hand is and if it recovered enough to continue woodworking. Remember that it was caught in a joiner? That looked really bad. I hope he is well.
November 19, 20214 yr Popular Post I wanted to know how old it was and many are still around. I think that our daughter may like to keep it with her other old things that she collects.

Gary, Without pictures (close-ups preferred) of your exact rule it's impossible to provide a date range. As for number around, I see a few advertised on Craigslist from time-to-time just in my locale...prices vary from $5-$50 depending on condition and age. I purchased one at a local flea market for a couple of bucks some time back and have seen others for sale. There always seems to be several for sale on eBay...prices all over the map. Another great resource for dating Stanley Tool trademarks can be found HERE Hope this helps answer your pressing questions. We're always here to help as best we can. Thanks for stopping by The Patriot Woodworker. Let us know what you determine about yours.
