August 16, 201510 yr Got the "lid" out of the clamps today. Ends needed to be squared up. Bandsaw tried, and failed to cut a straight line, again. Sooo Millers Fals No.14 Jack plane to straighten the edges. Panel needed flattened as well...Sooo Gave both the 14 and a No. 11 a crack at it. Part of the panel was a hair thicker than the other. Beltsander on standby.. Dressed the edges a bit.. Low angle block plane. Looks a little better? Got the box, and the lid, set things up in the clamps, needed to plane a bit more... Decided to give the sides a bit of "Tumblehome" where the sides taper towards the inside. Planes and beltsander to do all four sides. Don't have the hinges..yet. Got a bit tricky rotating the box around. Finally. Got things matched up.. Almost like a Jewelery Case? Gave the outside a coat of that SMELLY BLO... Just to see where I'm at.... Need to go out and find some hinges, maybe a latch? Then I can work on how I am going to stash all of them bits....stay tuned..
August 16, 201510 yr In keeping with the "vintage bits", leather hinges for the back. A couple of ball top pegs with a rawhide string for the latch.
August 17, 201510 yr Author I seem to be a more "modern" type. Got some Brass hinges, and a Brass latch. Got an aluminnum angle about 24" 3/4' x 3/4". Plan is to drill a few holes to hold the bits and screw the angle down. Have some of the black mesh from a tool box drawer. will put that down under the bits. may cut a strip or two of the mesh. The "extra" bits can then hang fron the lid, just slip them into place under the strips. Single Brain Cell Sketch-up is working on the details.....
