April 12, 201511 yr Id' like to thank the folks who participated in the first research question as seen at as posted by member Courtland. And now we have another question to spur the creative juices in a woodworker's heart. Let's talk about categories, main categories, if you were given 9 categories to define woodworking, what would they be? These 9 categories should be incredibly general, as there can be endless sub categories. For example, (not in any particular order) Industry (the world in woodworking, business, transportation of wood, milling, management) Technology (tools, machinery, advancements, etc) History (from the cavemen to modern day woodworkers, how did we get to where we are at today) People (basically famous folks, Tage Frid, Nakashima, etc.) Botany (the wood, it's uses, ratings of usefulness, types of wood, trees and more) Media (magazines, shows, advertising campaigns from the past, old labels, decals, graphic arts) (For a category I need one word that describes what woodworkers make, ie: cabinets, art, crafts, furnishings) (Empty) (Empty) Get the idea? If you can, try to stay away from narrowing down the discipline, that is what sub categories are for. We are looking for big generalizations for categories. Feel free to substitute anything we have on that category list thus far, this is only a sample. Thank you once again for your time and thought on this project.
April 12, 201511 yr Author Trends, philosophies (cultures), education Great job Lew, that is a must have category, now, can you narrow that down into one word? or was Trends the category? Or along your lines, how about "Society"? That may include philosophies, education and much more I am sure.
April 12, 201511 yr I was just throwing out ideas. Education probably needs listed someplace. We are all acutely aware of the relationships of educating woodworkers (or the lack of) and the affect it has on society.

April 12, 201511 yr If you use "Society" (for lack of a better term for now) then education would be a subcategory.
April 12, 201511 yr Author What's the purpose? Sorry for leaving that very important tidbit out Cliff, we are creating a wiki.
April 13, 201511 yr Author I have been thinking, anything to do with changing the molecular attributes of wood, could be generalized as "Processing" for a big general category that would cover all tooling and machinery, and finishing. Any comments about this category idea are greatly appreciate.
April 13, 201511 yr Just read this. Very interesting idea. Going with broad catagories covers a lot of ground. Was wondering if Safety would be worth while. Or is that too broad ?

Actually Wayne, that may be under a general category. How does this sound, perhaps "Safety" should go under "Industry" ?. Let me know what you think. But safety is a category that completely escaped me during this step, hmmmm, not good!

But safety is a category that completely escaped me during this step, hmmmm, not good! I would think if looking at it under that light it would also fit in technology. Dealing with tools etc. My only thought would be since it encapsulates a broad spectrum from running machines, dealing with dust, finising products , lighting ,flooring and the list goes on .... That maybe a general catorgory listed on it's own and then providing links to the associated areas through sub-catagories. Just a thought of maybe keeping it out front as a general reminder of the stuff we work with.

Any comments about this category idea are greatly appreciate. Can anyone think of a better word category for the manipulation of wood and it's changing attributes? Machining, securing, finishing, splitting, milling, what is one word that you think best describes that movement?
April 16, 201511 yr I'm of the group that Safety should be its own category and prominently displayed first on the list.

Moving towards safety as a general category Wayne, it had to settle on me for awhile, thanks for the great suggestion.

April 17, 201511 yr Author Probably not broad enough- Xylotheque You just went in the universe with that one Lew, to broad! That could of been the name of the wiki!
