March 13, 201511 yr In the past few weeks I did a bit of picking and ran across several Stanley pieces I thought I would share with you today. From 1855 to 1975 Stanley manufactured nineteen different rules with caliper slides. Up through 1932, the standard caliper slide arrangement was left handed. The caliper was set in the leg of the rule and graduated in such a way that when measuring across the top of an object with the caliper jaw pointing down. The caliper would be held in the left hand and the object in the right. This was the customary arrangement in the United States, in contrast to England and continental Europe, where right hand calipers were the norm. In 1934 Stanley changed from left hand calipers standard to right hand calipers standard. By this time only six caliper rulers were still in production. The Nos. 13 1/2, 32, 32 1/2, 36 36 1/2 and 136. The No. 36 1/2 is a 1 foot 2 fold Caliper rule and was first offered in 1855 and as late as 1963. This rule is a member of a small group of Stanley rules which were in production over 100 years. These rules are not real rare, but are collectable from the stand point of their production time. The one I found is not in mint condition and you can tell it was a user, but still a great find. The number 36 1/2 are a little easier to read. It has a great patina to it. The logo is a little hard to see but it is a Sweet Heart logo and this on is from somewhere around 1920's. So a nice find and addition to the Boxwood rulers I have. I also picked up at the same place this great little Stanley No. 60 1/2 Block Plane. These are great little low angel planes to keep in your shop apron. And then I found this really neat old wooden Stanley Hardware Box. Marked Stanley Works and New Britain, Conn. I plan on using it to display some of my Stanley tools on it. So that is about it for this pick, Even with the snow and rain, I get a chance every now and then to get out a do a bit of Patriot Picking. Till the next time, I'm Patriot Picking.....

March 16, 201511 yr Author Good stuff, John. When does the museum open? Thanks, Gene. I may need to look at a museum and see if I can make a bit of money.
