I wouldn't have turned this

Because of all the deep splits.  Maybe if the splits were filled  with something to solve for the structural issues presented but I think I'd have abstained without  something.  Maybe if I used the huge wire guard that came with my lathe I might - maybe - - -   But this guy just went with it and  - - well  - -  see video #2

Can't blame him for trying though.

I wonder how he walks?  I wouldn't try it.

I tried it, then stopped, out of my own inexperience!

The speed with which it went all to pieces is a perfect corollary  for my  insistence against wearing any kind of gloves  - Fagin or otherwise -  around machinery.

It all happens so fast.

Rings and long sleeves. I thought that was a BIG NO NO!

I got caught in an engine lathe back in the 1970s.  I had a pony tail.  It was almost to my waist.

stop laughing )

I was doing a gubbermit job turning  a cutting tool from O1.  I wanted a large diameter Buttress Thread wood tap and die and I was bloody well going to make a set.

The machine was in back gears going very - very  v-e-r-y slowly

I'd set the pass up and was chewing away at the stock.

All was going well.

 It was lunch hour.

I can't recall what I did that got me caught. I may have just bent over. I don't remember.

I  felt the tug.

I reached out and flipped the switch  just as the thing wound me down and away to the right.

The lathe ground to a halt with me in the lead screw nice and tight.

I  was sitting there on the floor trying to figure out how to disengage the lead screw given my limited reach when a fellow machinist happened by and set me free.

That very next day I had short hair.

Okay I never imagined you with a pony tail!

I'd try to turn just about anything, but that's just because of my own lack of experience in turning. Last bowl I tried to turn was going great ... until it flew into pieces around the workshop. Pretty cool video.
