Frig Magnets Out Of Scrap

Featured Replies

Here is something that is really useful and makes use of your colorful wood scraps, FRIDGE MAGNETS

Glue scraps together or just use a small chunk of waste. Super magnets are available and I got some of mine at HD

That some really small turning Ron, what type of lathe did you use?

That's cool stuff Ron I make a few of those now and then myself although it's been a while. I had hoped that they would be a pretty popular seller but not so much here. So, they just hang out on MY fridge :)

Left is Beech (I think) and right is Spalted maple.

John about 10 years ago I was a wood magazine subscriber and a forum member. I had a few shop tips and one even made their top ten tip list of the decade. For which I received NOTHING.  Anyway, I wrote to them about a question about table saws. They took all published entries and drew a name out of a hat (me) and I received a new Jet mini lathe with 3 good turning tools. That was my introduction to turning. I find that I love to turn and like a lot of guys, I'm self taught.

I like these, Charles. Some of the ones I've seen, others make, are a little large.

Yea Lew some are. The cool thing about larger ones though is that those people with less dexterity of the hands can use them.

That's awesome Ron, nice lathe too!! I am just beginning, I have had little opportunity to get on my lathe, but I am working up to it, I just want to turn something without it shattering into little pieces! Great work Ron!

If it shatters, you were probably turning too fast. :)

I hope you get to get on the lathe soon John I'd like to see some of that work.

Got on it tonight Charles! I chucked a small piece of walnut about 5" diameter and 2 inches thick, I am attempting to make a small bowl, I have the outline of the bowl looking pretty good. It's mounted to a 1 1/4" faceplate, I am going to turn the bottom tomorrow to accept the Easy Chuck, then I'll flip it around and chuck it up in the Easy Chuck and hollow it out. Wish me luck!

Yep good luck on that John. Hope yours doesn't do what my first one did. I was using maple about 1 1/8" thick, I was trying to make a plate or shallow bowl similar to one my mother had out of plastic in the mid 80s, used it a lot to feed the little ones (they were like 5 and 7 at the time).

I'll see if I can find a picture of it, but it all went well till I tried to remove it from the waste block and it hit the wall in the process lol. Took a big ol chunk out of it (TWICE), so I trashed it. Times like that, I wish I had a fire place.

Here it is :)
