Pocket Watch Cases

Featured Replies

I've been asked to build a few table cases for individual pocket watches. I've built a prototype that has the appearance of an ant farm. Have any of you built any watch cases that I could sneak a peek at your design?

No sir, not me, but I hope I see one here because I have never seen one before. I am going to google Pocket Watch Cases now, and see what I come up with, you have my curiosity boiling now.

Good luck with Google. I looked and looked and found nothing. Here's the prototype but I'm not happy with it. I kinda trew it together so the joints are as clean as I want. The glass measures 8" wide X 6" tall so you'll get an idea of the size. I think the next one will be a bit shorter and not so wide with a glass size of maybe 6 x4 or 6 x 5. Obviously the hooks aren't in place yet. If I use the one here I'll use two hooks. One for the watch and one for the chain. I'm open for any and all suggestions. I'm thinking there may be some $ to be made with these.

I have never built one either, but it is intriguing. I have met a woodworker at the craft shows I have been to lately that builds a lot of shadow box type cases. I'll see if I can find his card and see if he has anything along that line.

I like the design on the proto-type

I've built shadow boxes and they're pretty imple once you've done one. I suspect this will be the same way. I'm headed to the shop to make some dust and see what I can come up with.

Ron, I was just thinking he may have had some plans to something like that or had seen them.

I wasn't suggesting a shadow box. Sorry if I implied that.

No, you're good. I fully understood.

Hey Ronald, are you still having issues with posting pics?

  • Author

I didn't think so. Why? It came on as an attachment, not viewed.

OK John, here's the 2nd effort. About two or three more and I'll have it whereI want it.

That is looking good Ron! Now I know what a watch case looks like. Thanks for the educational pictorial and great work pal. Love the wood choice too.

Hey Ron, when you upload a pic, are using the camera icon at the top of the tool bar when you compose a post, or are using the "Upload Files" prompt at the bottom?

I was attaching at the bottom. How 'bout this?I'm not thrilled with the way the top joins. Its functional but the front and the back don't look smooth with joint there.

Wonderful!!! I think i see what your talking about with the top joinery, what was your method of joinery? Rabbit on the TS, or using the router.

So now you know how to load a pic Ron! Good job. Now we need to get the other Ron squared away.

I cut the rabbit on the TS. I was afraid the maple might chip away with a router.

Ron, I like the clock case. I have an old pocket watch from about 30 years back that I might have to give a new home to.

I like the way the watch is displayed along with the chain.

The tiger maple encases it very nicely.

The joinery looks good, know it might not be what you were expecting or wanting, but it look fine.

Nice job.

Are there more of these coming??

Actually John, I just built two more and stuck them on ebay just to see if they'd sell. I made one from cherry and one from white oak. Tyhe hardest thing was setting a price to them. I guess I'll just wait and see.

Best of luck with the ebay adventure.
