December 8, 201015 yr Hello Rob, Maye the following drawing will give you a better view of how I work doors, especially if they are typical. By using this method it is simple once you get the hang of it and to change the width of any door is done by shortening the rails and resize the panels. Ralph
December 8, 201015 yr Hi Ralph , Crystal clear , and yes similar to the way I construct a door ( interior ) . Your drawing is a good one !
December 8, 201015 yr Hey Rob, Yes, I like to make the botton doors you have pictured and the top pair of door has a Hispanic motif to them and seem interesting to build though I have not tried to make any of that style. Where is the little metal grill for the peep hole? Are the panels one piece with the grooves routed in? In the bottom picture the dark stained door looks like a 4' door, is that the case? I forgot to mention, thanks for your comments on my drawings. Ralph
December 8, 201015 yr Ralph , the grill is on the outside with a fitted- sealed speakeasy door on the side viewed . The panels are edge-glued planks with a hewn seam . I don't remember the width of the darker door but I included a couple more pics of it . The wall thickness is about 22 inches and the casement is 7 inches wide , maybe 6 inches tall .
December 8, 201015 yr Hi Rob, I love the Italianic trim, some call it Roman and the next house that we are going to do our version of "This old house" has it through out the first floor of which you will see in the videos while we are doing our repairs. The effect of the curved ceiling and trim is outstanding. Are the curved windows fake above the wood windows? One stair bannester and hand rail is so loose you can shake the bottom and the entire railing will move. I am hoping that there are dovetail joints so all I'll have to do is to shim in some wedges to strengthen the entire hand rails balusters. The skirt board trim has since been desposed of to a degree as someone threw them out rather than replace them. Ralph
December 8, 201015 yr Rob, Looking at the trim I am pulled to the keyway effect over the door in the center of the arch. It has a good effect in the design. Is this in a private home or what? Ralph
December 8, 201015 yr Hi Ralph , The windows are real , custom made . It is a private home that I spent over 2 years in doing wood work. I can post some more pics , probably in another thread . You have a good eye for architectural elements as this house was built "by the book " to cover historically , three generations of a Tuscan family . I have included a pic of their great room . LOTS of wood !
December 8, 201015 yr Wow Rob, Now that is my kind of work that I prefer with the open look and those beams are fantastic. Are those Walnut beams or stained hand hewed timbers. Is the roof sheathing T&G 12/4 oak or poplar? I would have liked being on that job with you for I am a nut when it comes to hand fitting parts and units. We were never fortunate to get to work on something that large but I sure would have liked to. Rob, with the trusses we are going to make for the 1780 house south of London to restore the veranda on the front of the house in the Federal Style with built in box gutters will be something that we will be videoing in the upcoming weeks and I will be taking some still shots as well so I can upload them here. I am sure you will take an interest in. I will post them on a different thread than this one for it is moving onto 5 pages now. I truly enjoy talking with you about these different styles. Ralph
