June 10, 201115 yr Well I have gotten a little more time in my shop this week, but we are experiencing as many of you maybe also an extreme heat wave. Hottest June in Alabama in 100 years. We are already pushing the 100 degree mark and not cooling off much at night so it makes the shop rather hot in the evenings when I get in from work. The air conditioning just can't cool it off when I turn in on after it is already hot. Â But, it is what it is and we still love to get into the shop. Â Put a coat of stain on my oak table last night. Monday night I put a coat of BLO on the hole table to match the section that it got spilled on. I guess I was lucky cause it matched up and you couldn't tell it had the spilled section. I used a GF gel stain to go over the table. It was so hot, you couldn't put on much without wiping it off pretty quick. It was drying so fast. I'll give it a once over and touch up any spots that the sweat might have dropped on. Â I am also just about finished putting the poplar edge banding on all of the cabinet edges. I hope to get everything sanded and a coat of stain on them sometime Saturday. I think I am heading down the home stretch with them. I haven't put the backs on yet so I can reach though, but they will get stained and then installed. Â I am also suppose to pick up about 5 large white oaks that were blown down in the recent storms. I went and looked at one yesterday. It is about 40" in diameter and the piece is about 15' long. I am hoping the Cat we have access to will get it up on the trailer. It is very solid in the middle, the whole root ball rolled up. Â So I have plenty of things to keep me busy and some of it in the shop. Â How about you, what you are working on this weekend?
June 10, 201115 yr I have a childrens' knock down rocking chair sitting on the bench waiting to be shipped out to a lady in Arizona once she gets back to me. I also have some mahogany, walnut and padauk that has been waiting for me to plane/cut/glue into a couple of straight strip cutting boards as gifts which was supposed to have been done 2 weeks ago. On the shelf I have the red oak that I picked up a couple of weeks ago to build a new vanity for our downstairs half bath, but that go put off as I will have to do a complete re-texturing and painiting before it can go in. Things have all been put on hold the past few weeks due to Memorial Day and having to deal with a larger family BBQ and then my wife's purse got stolon so dealing with getting all that back in order (nothing showed up on the debit/credit cards so only financial loss was about $20-$30 in cash and a $35 gift card). Add into that starting up a long term bible study of the book of Revelation in our home fellowship group that we host and lead and my tools have set dormant and are starting to growl at me when I walk through the garage. But today I WILL get the cutting boards done.......after taking my wife's car in for a smog check so it can be registered and getting the oil changed on my truck.
June 10, 201115 yr Nothing on my bench John but a load of ply scraps and tools that I need to get off my bench! My shop is going through convulsions right now with all the AC PLY sawdust and shavings all over the place from the truck box build. It's not used to all that formaldehyde and chemicals and glue, it's been along time since man made lumber was run through my cutters, my shop is used to all the fine wine, walnut, cherry and such. I hear it screaming now as a matter of fact, 'Get this filth off of me!"Â John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
June 10, 201115 yr Nothing on mine this weekend. My doughter has a softball tournament Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is pushing 100 degrees here too. Not a pleasent climate for softball.  I do have a Wood mag glider I have to start on and a sofa table for my sister. Oh yea, a TV stand for the local child abuse center to finish. Anyone have any extra time?
June 10, 201115 yr It is a balmy 64 F here in Belgrave Ontario . Today i am building a log style bird feeder for the very first time . The rest of the weekend i,ll be starting some new bird hotels I started this feeder this morning
June 10, 201115 yr Author Wow Allen, your list sounds a lot like mine. When I check off one, there are already two more to add. I sure am thankful I am not bored. June 10, 201115 yr Author  I love it man. Mine has had so much of a mixture lately it has no idea what I might bring in.  John Morris said: Nothing on my bench John but a load of ply scraps and tools that I need to get off my bench! June 10, 201115 yr Author So John those are just too awesome. Â So I am looking at it and I am sure it is obvious but where will they feed from? June 10, 201115 yr Still wading through my wife's curio. The lower unit is built and the upper unit has been glued and has about 25,000 clamps hanging off it. Hopefully I can sand the upper unit tomorrow and fit the raised panel sides to it. Next week I'll have the glass fitted. It is a fun project but a bit nerve racking.  Since I'mm fitting the top to the base there is NO room for error. June 10, 201115 yr There is a 3/8" gap at the bottom of each side . i,ll put a v-shape slope inside to force the seed outwards . John Moody said: So John those are just too awesome. June 10, 201115 yr Author I can't wait to see the picture of that. You should have taken and posted some of the glueup. Ron Dudelston said:Still wading through my wife's curio. The lower unit is built and the upper unit has been glued and has about 25,000 clamps hanging off it. Hopefully I can sand the upper unit tomorrow and fit the raised panel sides to it. Next week I'll have the glass fitted. It is a fun project but a bit nerve racking.  Since I'mm fitting the top to the base there is NO room for error.Ron DudelstonAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
June 10, 201115 yr Ok, here is photograpic proof that I actually did work in my shop on woodworking related items.  I got a total of 11 cutting boards glued up with 1 larger one (16"x12" final size) and 10 smaller square ones (8"x8" final size) which are made in 5 sperate glue ups and then cut into 2 pieces. They were made using a few different combinations of walnut, maple, mahogany, purple heart and padauk. Tomorrow (hopefully) I will get them all finished. The large one I made for our youth pastor who got married recently. We gave him and his wife a smaller cutting board and they wanted a larger one to go with it. The 10 smaller 8"x8" ones will go into the gift box to keep my wife happy as she has the "gift of giving".   I got 10 of the Children's Knock Down Rocking Chairs done and set aside which are are on the bottom shelf. The top shelf is the red oak for our future bathrrom vanity. Â
June 11, 201115 yr Author Wow you really did get busy in the shop. That is awesome.  Okay, I am a little slow, explain the five different glue ups and then cut into two pieces. I am missing something, but I haven't had coffee yet this morning.  I love your sign on the fridge!!! June 11, 201115 yr Author Okay so I got in the shop early this morning, got the air turned on to try to keep the shop somewhat comfortable this morning. So I got the last of the 3/4 x 3/4 poplar edge banding on the cabinets. Got to get them all sanded and hopefully a coat of stain on them today. I was informed last night they have got to be delivered Wednesday. It is going to be a looonnnng day. Hope you are getting some projects done, share it with us.John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworks
June 11, 201115 yr John,I typically cut my strips into 18" lengths of 3/4" thick stock using 15 pieces for my larger cutting boards (finished size 16"x11.5" finished and sanded). For the 8"x8" square small cutting boards I use 11 pieces of 18" lengths which gives it a width of approximately 8" and 18" long which I will cut in half to make 2 of the *' square cutting boards. When I make trivets I use 7 pieces of 18" lengths which will give me 3 5" square trivets. I try my best to keep my waste down so making these cutting boards and trivets make good use of smaller pieces. As for the sticker on on the fridge, we got a few of these a number of years ago and my wife has one on her car and I had one on my old truck but I do not have one on my current truck. I keep telling myself that I need to get another one, but I keep forgetting. So after taking the photo yesterday it reminded me to get some more. So I ordered 50 of them ($.25 each plus $5.95 shipping for the lot) and should get them next week some time. I would be happy to pass along a few to you if you would like. They come from a group called "American Life League" which is a "Pro-LIfe" Catholic organization that is very active politically and socially. I am Protestant not Catholic by theology, but I stand with these guys on being "Pro Life". They sell a lot of buttons, shirts, stickers, etc for low prices. Some years ago when I was involved in youth ministry we did a couple years where we got "Pro-Life T-Shirt Day" shirts. This is something that they push each year and we got about 100 shirts which the kids wore to school on that day. I got the stickers in their "Clearance" section, but they have had these things for years . So let me know and I will be happy to send some your way when I get them.Â
June 11, 201115 yr Author I see what you are saying, I though you were saying each one was five glue ups and then you cut it in half. You meant to make them all it was five glue ups. Dud. I told you it was probably obvious and I just had a moment. Let me know when you have them I will get a few from you. Thanks  John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworks
June 17, 201115 yr I'm either early for this post or a week late but here's the update on mama's curio. Hopefully I can finish triming it out tomorror and get the doors bored for the hinges. Ron DudelstonAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
June 17, 201115 yr It looks absolutely beautiful Ron, great job man!! Lighting? What kind and what's the wattage your using? The only thing I can think of that would improve your picture you posted, is if TPW was up on your monitor in the background! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
