Need 10 guys to try the New General Finishes Wood Turners Finish

Featured Replies

Hello Folks. I need 10 people to email me their mailing address at

bob at bobkloes.com

replace the at with the right @

General Finishers would like to have 10 wood turners try their new product "Wood Turners Finish" and give them their thoughts. I will forward your addresses to General Finishes. I have no horse in this race. I am just a very happy user of their products and just was asked to do this. Don't send me messages here. Just email me. I will post when I have enough. Thanks, bob

Over at Fine Woodworking the writer wrote of a suggested retail price of around $28.00 a quart.Wonder if they will sell in smaller quantities like pints?

Ace they will be selling smaller sizes. I believe pints and maybe 1/2 pint sizes. Still have some to send out. Let me know guys. Can't beat free to try it. bob

I'll give it a try (email en route). What type of finish is it (glossy, satiny, matte, etc)?

P.S. I'm seeing it referred to as WTF elsewhere. Took me a bit to realize what they actually meant by that.

Justin...I hear ya! Me too...Maybe its so good you will say it!  24.gif

I also sent you a reply.

Mine just arrived. Can't wait to run it through its paces. I also want to fuss some with water-based dyes using friction (sorta friction...better put, hand applied) And it has been my experience, with any new finish, probably will be a small learning curve to go with it. 113.gif

Mine arrived yesterday. Looking forward to trying it out.

One of the things that intrigued me about the finish is the claim that it won't break down like CA.  Now I've been using a pen finished with CA for a couple years now and it has been beat to...some nasty place. The finish on the metal components is all scratched and unpleasant, yet the finish on the wood has nary a dent in it.  It's one of the reasons I'm such a fan of CA finishes.

So I'll definitely have to put this through it's paces. However, since CA is a pain to apply what with the fumes, the adhesive nature of it, and the heat whenever it comes in contact with cotton, a simple wipe on finish that ends with a nice clear coat will be welcome. That and the cost is much less than CA.

Mine came yesterday also. I hope to try it this weekend.

I got the small bottle.

I received mine yesterday also. Will use it at the first opportunity.

I took my bottle to the West Tennessee Wood Turners meeting today.  Most had not heard about it. One gentleman from the Memphis guild had, and has used it.  He was ecstatic about it.

The demonstration today was on threading.  The demonstrator made a small acorn with a threaded lid and body.  After sanding he commented that he usually finishes with sanding sealer and WOP.  I spoke up and offered him my WTF to try.  5 coats in 5 minutes and he was sold.  He applied it like a friction polish and buffed it with a paper towel.  The finish on Cocobolo and Bocote was silky smooth and high gloss.  After the demonstration I was quizzed by several, including the demonstrator, on the finish.  I brought over the other turner that had bought it retail and had him explain where he got it.  I also made copies of the product sheet and handed them out.

I have so far only used it on a pen barrel.  Because of the thinness, building a finish takes a little time.  However, the finish dries so fast coats can add up in hurry.  More to come on how it works on pens.

Greg

Still building coats on a freehand tapered rolling pin.  The oak was very thirsty, and has been soaking up about 5 coats thus far, and it's still not done.  I like the ease of applying, but it takes longer to dry than other finishes that I've been using.

Will continue to report as I finish up.

First, dye the wood yellow using a paper towel. Then applied some heat with a hair dryer to speed the dry. Sanded the yellow off with 320 paper and repeated 2 more times. This gets the dye down into the curl of the wood.

Second, then apply the Black Cherry stain using toilet tissue directly over the yellow dye. Takes about 3 coats, then when dry, I buff with a paper towel. Should you experience any unevenness with the stain. I dampen the corner of the paper and go back over the surface to work it out. If necessary, get more stain on and wipe back to reactivate your stain.

Third, apply the Wood Turners Finish directly to the wood with lathe speed set on low. I use toilet tissue under the piece to collect the finish and gently kiss the wood with the tissue to work the finish from left to right. With each application, use a fresh piece of toilet tissue.

Fourth, after the 3rd application, I used 320 grit paper to de-nib (careful not to sand through) then wiped the wood clean of dust. Then applied 3 more coats and called it done.

Hint… I used a hair dryer between coats to accelerate the dry, don’t get too hot with the air, and switch between warm/cold air. (this step was not really necessary, because the finish dried fast on it own!)

Fifth, I sanded the finish with 2000 grit Abralon pad, cleaned the surface than applied the wax and buffed using toilet tissue.

                                                                           Conclusion

I found the product very easy to use.

The more I used it, the better I became applying it, and actually found it was not necessary to sand or buff the finish.

Dries in minutes, even faster if you use the accelerator (a hair dryer  Grin.gif  Grin.gif  ) Was able to completely finish in less that 15 minutes.

General Finishes, I think found itself a real winner!

Next, I will spray the finish on the lathe,  then test using it as a wiping finish for flat work, so I have read?????????

Good stuff guys. The hairdryer trick does work well. I too will be trying some on flat work. I can see where oak would soak it up. Lots of open grain. Keep the reports coming guys. bob

OK Ace, now you've peaked my curiosity because I've been wondering how to get that holographic stain look for about a decade now. This is probably a conversation for another topic, but I would love it if you would talk more about achieving that type of finish. Grain is in the top three reasons why I love woodworking.

Yup no problem...I'll write something up.113.gif Right now I'm pressed for 110.gif
