January 7, 201214 yr Can any of our turners do this? I would like to replace the black plastic knobs on my Walker Turner DP re build and make them wood. Obviously you'll be compensated for your work. Who's game!!!!Thanks!!!John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
January 8, 201214 yr Author The knobs are perfectly balled, 1-3/8" in diameter. After thinking about it, I could get the inserts and tell whoever makes them the diameter I need drilled in the middle for the inserts to fit. So you'd be sending me 4 balls with hole drilled out.You can see the plastic knobs in this discussion. Walker Turner. Thanks guys!John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
January 8, 201214 yr Get that hjole size and I'll get into the shop Monday to turn one just to see what I can come up with... for whatever reason, perfectly round balls are the hardest things for me to turn but with a 1-3/8" circle template I think I can manage.
January 8, 201214 yr Author Right on Donnie! I'll get the size, but I don't know if I can get it by Monday. Thanks for giving it a try. Post progress pics if you feel like it!D. January 8, 201214 yr I haven't mastered how to make duplicates of anything I've turned. lol  I'm still working on that technique.  Making a ball and four of them no less?  That's way over my head.  SQHappiness is wood chips flying!
January 8, 201214 yr Author Isn't that amazing Sue, something so seemingly easy is not. I have a hard time drilling a hole in the center of ball too!SQ said: I haven't mastered how to make duplicates of anything I've turned.  I'm still working on that technique.  Making a ball?  That's way over my head.  SQ Happiness is wood chips flying! January 8, 201214 yr I use my 4 jaw chuck to drill through the wooden balls that I have drilled. May I suggest that you get somme wooden balls that are close to the right size and drill and tap the threads in the balls themself. That would eliminate the need for threaded inserts.
January 9, 201214 yr Author Great suggestion Kieth. Let me look into this guys.keith long said:I use my 4 jaw chuck to drill through the wooden balls that I have drilled. January 9, 201214 yr Author Yet another sound option, thanks Arlin.Arlin Eastman said:What would really work great is to drill some square stock and drill a hole in the middle then put in the insert treads and then make the ball. Works really great.I would do it for you however, I can not do any work at all including woodworking for awhile.ArlinJohn MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
