January 13, 201214 yr Cold days are upon a lot of us. I know it is still 70 on the west coast. Here in the sunny south, it is cold, low 20's last night and the high today and this weekend is mid 40's during the day. I'll have the gas heat on in the shop. So I have been working on another Cedar Chest and hope to get it ready for finish this weekend. I have the dovetails cut and the glue up done. Got to do the sanding on the corners and get them smooth. Got some time in the shop last night to get the panel for the top glued up. I should be able to get is sanded smooth, the edges routed and the hinges mounted Saturday morning. I am using Torsion hinges like these. I also got the pieces to make up the legs and skirt around the bottom planed last night so I am ready to cut the profile and the miters on the corners and glue it up. That's going to be most of my weekend with a project or two slipped in. What are you working on this weekend? John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
January 13, 201214 yr Thanks for asking John. Building flag cases. Christmas wiped me out so I'm setting up to build 6 or so.Ron DudelstonAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
January 13, 201214 yr Well, it's Friday the 13th, miserable cold (first time this winter, tho'), and with some errands to do today I think I'll pass on the shop. Maybe Sunday I'll get back out there. Besides I'm still waiting on some glass panes to be cut for the doors on a project i just completed....and it's kinda sitting in the way at the moment. No Ref

January 13, 201214 yr My job today will be cementing international relationships. I'll be making (starting) 7 different band saw boxes for friends of my son that we met in Okinawa. Four, for the children, will be from AZ pine, the next 3 will be for the parent couples will be walnut and maple. The pine ones are circles with legs, one drawer. Two of the walnut ones will be sort of "S" shaped with two drawers and will be called Habu Boxes. The Habu is a very deadly snake on Okinawa. The final walnut box will resemble two stalks with two "pods" on each stalk. Each "pod" will house a drawer.Friday the 13th, huh? Ya'll be careful out there.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
January 13, 201214 yr Since I got the batch of 2 cutting boards, 4 trivets and 12 coasters completed and mailed out yesterday to a gentleman in NYC, I got some stuff cleaned up and organized in the shop. I met with our Small Groups Pastor at church yesterday to show him the prototypes of the frames that he wants to hang on the walls in the foyer and down the main hall at church to put different printed media on. He liked what he saw and we discussed a few changes to make things work, so he will be checking out a few things for media size and will get back to me next week with the final dimensions of the media so I can make the frames to fit. I will be making a total of 10 frames in 2 different designs, so that will keep me busy for a couple of weeks. Today Tami and I will be heading out of town for the weekend to see Tami's folks in Yuma, AZ which is about 270 miles door to door. So nothing wood related this weekend, but we will be looking at some rugs while in Yuma as we need some new ones for our family room as our style in there is Southwest/Mission/Arts & Crafts so we want to get some new rugs that reflect the Southwest colors and design to fit in as our old rugs are getting pretty worn. Since Yuma is right on the border with Mexico, there is a wide range of stuff in the category so hopefully we can get what we need.Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.nethttp://www.awcreationsandwoodcrafts.com'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. January 14, 201214 yr To follow-up We made the drive to Yuma last night with no problems and little traffic so we made it in a bit over 4 hours. Today we went to the swap meet and found the rug dealer that was saw last time we were there. We found a design and color palette that we both agreed on and bought 5 rugs total with 2 large ones for the main floor areas, 2 small ones for in front of the garage and patio doors and 1 runner for the hallway all for under $350 which is very good. Here is a photo of one of the small ones which is the same pattern for all of them. It is a cell phone photo so the colors look pretty dull but they are more vibrant in person.  Allen Worsham said: Since I got the batch of 2 cutting boards, 4 trivets and 12 coasters completed and mailed out yesterday to a gentleman in NYC, I got some stuff cleaned up and organized in the shop. January 14, 201214 yr Author Great looking rug Allen. Sounds as though you drove a hard bargain with them. Tell us were you smiling when you walked away with that deal? LOL John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
January 14, 201214 yr Yes, I was able to talk him down some. I probably could worked him harder for a bit more, but we both made money on the deal so it was fine with me and was considerably less than what I could get them for locally in my area if I could even find the pattern. My wife also bought some new queen size sheets with 4 pillow cases all in cotton for $17 as well as a few kitchen items for $8 which would cost us 2-3 times that locally. I also picked up a new cell phone case for $6 which would cost 2-3times more locally. Tami's Mom picked up a few things as well, so it was a good day.Tami and her Mom went out to see a movie (War Horse) while Tami's Dad and I stayed at the house. Dad is watching an old western (he loves westerns na pretty much watches Fox New/Business and the Western channel) while I got the 49er-Saints playoff game on. Then it will be "Tebow Time" and the Bronco-Patriots game.:-)Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.nethttp://www.awcreationsandwoodcrafts.com'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. January 16, 201214 yr Author As an update I had a minor interruption in my woodworking this weekend as I had to change out the under sink disposal. Let me say up front, I hate plumbing, but thanks to google, the change out went without a drip! I should have some pictures this afternoon of the Cedar Chest. Headed to the shop now to finish the top and then a little sanding and it will be ready for finish. How about the rest of you, how are you doing on progress on your weekend agenda. January 16, 201214 yr Here's a  pic of the one of the little boxes that will be sent to Japan. This is one of four. 5 1/2 high, Arizona pine and oak legs. I tried to make the legs from pine, then cedar. They all broke , so they are now oak. The other three will have golf tees for a pull. Haven't decided on a finish yet. Any suggestions? January 17, 201214 yr Author Well I got my Cedar Chest finished and ready to put the finish on it. Just giving the shop a day or two for the dust to settle before I start spraying a finish. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
