SQ - that's what it's for - when I get it working.

obtw folks - Was going to make the video today and decided to take it for a spin (as it were).  After about 5 minutes the drive wheel got really sloppy.  Couldn't keep it peddling right.  Checked into it and - hold on to your shorts - I BROKE THE KEY.  The plans call for it to be made from 1/4" baltic birch.  Not good.  Took the thing apart again, went out and got an aluminum strip, epoxyed two together to make it thicker, trimmed down to size, rebuilt the drive wheel and peddles to make them fit the aluminum.  Will give it try again tomorrow.  THEN maybe I can get the video.  This weekend project is getting expensive (but will be great when I get it to work the way I want it.

Latest news in the saga.

In practicing, I noticed that the blade was hanging up in corners due to a badly slipping belt on the small pully.  "No problem", I said to myself, "Just move it a little bit and I'll be fine".

Wrong - - - - - - as I was tightening up the last screw, the shaft broke - - @$%Frown.gif#$%#$ - - OK, time to re-group.  I have decided to make an elongated hole in the frame with two bolts through the shaft holder.  Design will be posted here when completed today.

Here we go again - redesign time - this time it is a new way to connect pedals to the operating arm.  Seems that after a total of about 2 hours on the machine, I have wallered out the attachment holes and now I can't keep pedals right.  Back to the drawing board.  Going to look into a way of attachment of pedals similar to a standard bicycle.

Is this thing really going to work for a craft show?????

Fred,

How about using part of a bicycle frame?

That or one of the stationary exercize bicycles for the main frame.

I've also seen where people have used the treadle base from an old sewing machine with success. My Delta American Boy Scroll Saw from 1923 would work great on one of these, as it takes a small round belt like a sewing machine. It's only an 8" saw though. Delta also made a 12" version of the American Boy.100_01141?width=721100_01131?width=721

Larry - good lookin saw - and a lot lighter in weight than mine.

Solved the problem by actual bolting the peddle bolt to the peddle arm.  (See Picture).

ning-new-peddle-34219-44.jpg

Green arrows point to the two nuts that I put on the shaft of the carriage bolt.  The red arrow points to a drill-through hole in both the nut and bolt and attached a cotter pin.  The actual peddle pads rotate ok on the smooth portion of the carriage bolt thereby (in theory) not wallowing out the peddle.  Time will tell.

This seems to work for now.  gotta get on this thing and build up some leg and thigh muscles and to practice.

Larry, after all the mods were done, it's actually easy to pedal now.  Hope it holds up through the show season.  Smile.gif

I love it.

So many people do not realize that you can make almost all your own woodworking machinery. I have all the issues of Fine Woodworking (yes including the very first issue), and in the early years they showed plans on how to build everything from a belt sander to a sawmill. Today you can buy plans and kits to build everything from a tablesaw to a drill press...all made structurally from plywood. You can see this by punching up Gillium Woodworking Machinery. Myself I have a 18 inch Gillium Bandsaw.

Its great to see people like yourself Fred who are not afraid to make their own tools. I love your efforts. Great Job!

Latest Update On The Saw

It got a real workout this past weekend .  We were vendors at "Celebrate Clayton" in Clayton, GA.  My son and I manned the booth on Saturday.  Swapping off time on the saw, we were really surprised that, at times, we had folks 4 and 5 deep standing around us watching the saw's actions.  We made little animal silhouettes and gave them away to kids.

The saw held up really well.  I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.  The only "repair" that I had to do when we got home was to pin the pedal to the main axle.  (Another wallowing of the key).  Below are a couple of pictures of the actions.

Have to double up on this one.  Kids had more fun playing with it.  Only got a few adults to actually use it.  The adults that DID use it were scrollers.  Adults had more fun watching us especially when we were explaining what it was and us complaining about hip pain and how our ancestors were in better shape than we were.  Smile.gif
