February 12, 201214 yr Thanks all for your kind words. But I find when I am working in the word of the Lord, it is not work, more like peace and relaxation. Hard to describe but life don't get any better. Started another shadow box for the wife tonight, should be done by next week end, time permitting. Still need time to work on designing the K-Cup carousel for the Mrs. too. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
February 12, 201214 yr Author Allen those look really good. The finish looks great and so even. Looks like you got the dye figured out. You might have to write a blog on the experiences of using dye the first time.Good job. I know it wasn't the way you had planned, but life gives us those lane changes every now and then just to take us out of our comfort zone.John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
February 12, 201214 yr OK, I know it's Sunday already, but I did finally managed to get all 10 rolling pin blanks glued up and ready for the lathe operation. Now that the table saw is free, going to try and finish the router lift project from "ShopNotes". Need to make a trip to Lowes for hardware and, knowing how poorly stocked they are there, probably have to order some stuff from Fastenal. Also have to dig thru old left over projects to find some stuff to donate to the local Vocational School silent auction. I have some wine bottle stoppers, bread and oil trays and hopefully a rolling pin.Now it's on to my Mom's taxes!Lew-Time traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!

February 13, 201214 yr Allen, Very nice job. Â SQAllen Worsham said: I have been working on the 10 frames (5 large at 43"x43" and 5 smaller at 36"x26") for church made from 5/4 Beech. I should have had the 5 large frames completed and delivered on Friday, but the Beech did not like the stain that I was using and was really blotchy. So I had to sand down the 5 large frames to bare wood and start over from scratch using dye. It took me 2 days to get them sanded down as well as wiping all 10Â frames down with water to raise the grain and then giving them a final 220 grit sand to get ready for dying. The dye worked well and was a bit of a learning curve as this was the first time I have used dye.The color evened out pretty well and is a bit different than the original stain, but they should look ok. I only had to make up 1 gallon worth of the dye as that beech soaked it up like a sponge. So hopefully tomorrow I will be able to start spraying a seal coat of blonde shellac (since the dye is water borne) before spraying a few coats of satin polycrylic for the top coat. Here are some of the frames. The frames look like they are 2 different shades, but that is just the lighting. February 13, 201214 yr Lewis, Just hearing about all you accomplish during shop time - exhausts me.   You have time management down to a fine science.  SQ Lewis Kauffman said: OK, I know it's Sunday already, but I did finally managed to get all 10 rolling pin blanks glued up and ready for the lathe operation. February 13, 201214 yr I personally would not turn anything with a crack in it unless it was small enough to be mended with CA glue. Â Cracks or splits are a catch waiting to happen.SQHappiness is wood chips flying!
February 14, 201214 yr Thanks SQ and John! All those plans were altered this morning when I received a call to take over for the Network Administrator today and tomorrow. You know, the best laid plans of mice and men... February 14, 201214 yr SQ is right about the CA. I'd use some of the thin stuff and allow it to run down in the crack. Mabe a coule of applications on the larger cracks. Charles Nicholls said: I am still working on the piece that I started on friday, still trying to get it round so that I can hollow it out. I never knew a 4x4x3" piece of wood could be so messy lolGetting close. The problem here is that as I worked on it I find that it did split after all, in several places. The question is now, Will it still be good to turn? I think it will be ok since i wont be turning at any great speed but I am not experienced with pieces that have split so i don't know. Any ideas? Thoughts? Charlesnicholls61@att.nethttp://www.nichollswoodworks.comThis website is new so it doesn't have much to it yet but you are welcome to take a look
