Hey gang, here we are at the end of another week and wow what a week it has been. I am ready for a little rest and relaxation, just don't know where I am going to squeeze that in.

I have a cedar chest on my bench to do a little repair on. I had a very nice lady call me to take a look at this one. It was built by her high school sweetheart and the skirt around the bottom has broken on the end and the front. It has some sentimental value and she wants to keep it, so I am removing the skirt all the way around and building a new one to put on the chest. Most everything came off without too much problem, but where it had broken off, I will have to do a little repair work behind the new skirt. (Pictures later tonight)

Also got a to start another batch of cutting boards. Craft show season for me is about one month away so I am trying to get my inventory up.

Got a little time last night to play on the new scroll saw. Didn't really make anything, just cut some lines to get a feel for it and how to feed everything. I am looking forward to actually making something soon.

What are you all working on this weekend before Valentines Day? Are you making something for your sweetheart, working on the HDL, home improvement, or just working on the shop?

Share with us what you are working on this weekend.

I think I'll take the week end off.

Might do a little straightening up in the shop.

No show this weekend so I'll have more shop time. This is good as a nasty head cold has kept me cooped up in the house all week. I have a bench and a walnut and cherry chopping block for special orders. It's also inventory building time for upcoming shows.

I got a bunch that needs doing but the only wood I cut might just be some trees and bushes that need pruning badly, should have been done a month ago. It has been such a warm winter here our blue berry bushes have leaves already, and now we're supposed to drop in the low 20's for Sat. & Sun. night. And I need to work on my next scroll saw blog, might just try to work on it tonight when I get home.

Put the felt bottoms on the cross n hearts for Sunday.  Have to finish a bible verse display for some friends. The Mrs. wants a carousel for the K-Cups for the Keurig, so I am hoping to get some of the design work on it done.

Working on a new experimental bowl.  This is laminated strips of maple which I'm inserting walnut rings that are 1/4 inch between the maple bowl rings.  Bowl started out at 13 1/4 inches and with the extra layers of walnut between each rings it's a whopping 5 inches tall.  :)   It's attached to the lathe with a waste block and all is holding well. I bought a riser block so re-sawed the walnut and planed it down to 1/4 inch.  Used the bowl rings as a pattern but next time will use the actual bowl patternn for more accuracy.  Right now getting the exterior smooth.  Will be starting on the interior shortly.  The riser block just works fantastic!  Cut's those boards that are 12 inches high like butter.  :)  Bowl pattern is a bit busy, but again this is a ring insert experiment.

You guys got a lot going on. Wayne looks like you are making the deadline. Way to go.

SQ, good to see you posting. I love the experimental bowl. The walnut rings are a nice accent. Way to go on the re-sawing. Man you are really coming on with this woodworking. Bowl looks good, can't wait to see it finished.

John,

Thanks.   I thought about using veneer for an accent between the layers but thought a riser block would be cheaper in the long run. This way the walnut inserts are all one piece, which I much prefer. Love this riser block.  Comes in handy for so many projects.

John, I have started with the coughing this weekend. Afraid I may be trying to pick up a cold. Started some mess so I hope I can stop it before it gets going. I need to be in the shop but not feeling real spunky today.

Charles some band saws will allow you to add a riser block to inrease the largest cut you can make from say 6" to 12". Not all band saws have this ability. So it increases the distance from the top of the table to the bottom of the opening for the band saw blade.

Charles,

John M gave you good advice about the riser block.  My Jet band saw could only re-saw wood up to 6 inches thick before we got the riser block installed.  Now it cuts up to 12 inches thick.  The blade is set low in the picture but can be set higher to accommodate thicker wood.  Picture two shows the actual riser block.  Band saw now takes 105" blades.  93 1/2 was the blade size before this conversion.  ning-riserblockonbandsaw-34158-22.jpgning-backviewofriserblock-34158-81.jpg

I have been working on the 10 frames (5 large at 43"x43" and 5 smaller at 36"x26") for church made from 5/4 Beech. I should have had the 5 large frames completed and delivered on Friday, but the Beech did not like the stain that I was using and was really blotchy. So I had to sand down the 5 large frames to bare wood and start over from scratch using dye. It took me 2 days to get them sanded down as well as wiping all 10  frames down with water to raise the grain and then giving them a final 220 grit sand to get ready for dying. The dye worked well and was a bit of a learning curve as this was the first time I have used dye.The color evened out pretty well and is a bit different than the original stain, but they should look ok. I only had to make up 1 gallon worth of the dye as that beech soaked it up like a sponge. So hopefully tomorrow I will be able to start spraying a seal coat of blonde shellac (since the dye is water borne) before spraying a few coats of satin polycrylic for the top coat.

Here are some of the frames. The frames look like they are 2 different shades, but that is just the lighting.

Nice job. Like the way they came out. I understand about the lighting, but they really do look great. I am sure they will be happy with them.
