March 7, 201214 yr I have a 4-jaw chuck and a collet chuck, but I'm still not convinced they are the best for roughing. Paul Krautman was/is a professional woodturner in our Showme Woodturners and he always starts with a face plate. When I was teaching in the '70's and early '80's we didn't have the fancy chucks yet, and we did all bowl turning with face plates and backing plates sandwiched with paper. We also used powdered resin glue for most of the critical glue ups. It rendered a fine brown glue line at times but no worries about heat build-up or moisture softening.Dan Coleman

March 19, 201214 yr Author First bowl went to the designer bowl firewood bin. The second bowl is ready to come out of the clamp as soon as I have a little time. SQ said:John, Any updates on the first bowl or the second bowl? SQ Happiness is wood chips flying!
March 23, 201214 yr Great job! Nice little bowl press jig. I made one of the collapseable bowls which was nice. I have been thinking of trying out one similar to what you are making but I have been getting my shop organized so haven't done much. Would like to see the finished product!
March 24, 201214 yr Looking forward to seeing it John! John Moody said:First bowl went to the designer bowl firewood bin. May 19, 201214 yr Using the lathe almost seems like cheating... doesn't Rothman sand it all down? I don't have a lathe... don't have room for one and I never used one... but I figured out how to use the basic "bowl from a board" method that Rothman uses in her book (and many others have used before) to make things other than bowls ala Malcom Tibbetts. Spence
May 19, 201214 yr John,How is that second bowl coming along? Â I'm still looking forward to seeing it. Â SQHappiness is wood chips flying!
May 19, 201214 yr Spence,I started making the Carole Rothman bowl method when her first book came out but I used  a tilting spindle sander for sanding interior and exterior.  I finally got smart and put them on the lathe.  The lathe is so much easier.  I personally will never go back to doing them by hand.  SQSpence Bloom said:Using the lathe almost seems like cheating... doesn't Rothman sand it all down? I don't have a lathe... don't have room for one and I never used one... but I figured out how to use the basic "bowl from a board" method that Rothman uses in her book (and many others have used before) to make things other than bowls ala Malcom Tibbetts. Spence
May 19, 201214 yr I don't blame you... it can be a LOT of sanding. I'm envious that you have an easier way!!
