My First Scroll Saw Project - Gone Bad

Featured Replies

No Craft Show last night so I am ahead for the moment on cutting boards and decided today to get the scroll saw out and see if I could use it.

I purchased Carol Rothman's book Wooden Bowls from a Scroll Saw after seeing some of the bowls SQ was making.

ning-woodenbowlsbook-32937-3.pngSo the first project was to make the bowl clamp. I know this is not up to the projects many of you are doing, but hey I have to start with something. So I cut out a circle. Grin.gif

ning-imag0053-32937-81.jpgYou have to make the clamp before you can clamp the bowl from a board, so I got my clamp made. I did good cutting out a circle.

Then I cut out the circles for the bowl from a board and got it glued and in the clamp.

ning-imag0054-32937-64.jpgWell while I had it going, I went ahead and cut another set from the same cherry board. So when this one comes out of the clamp, I will glue up the next one.

ning-imag0055-32937-99.jpgThen they will be ready to put on the glue block and put them on the lathe and turn them down.

So how about it SQ how am I doing for my first two board bowls?

Well I at least used the scroll saw even if all I did was cut circles.Grin.gif

More will come.

Wow John! That is way cool man, great work. You'll have that bowl clamp for years to come looks like to me. Sometimes the biggest part of the first one is building the jigs and templates, like the rocker I am working on. But now your obviously off and running.

I noticed the rubber pad, is that router pad draped across the table and if so, does it work?

Looking good my friend, really good! Nice to see you get some time in on something different John.

Yes it is a pad. I do my sanding and routing on the pad.

Not an easy road to take for breaking in the scroll saw. Great job man. Looking forward to the finished product. Way to go.

That's outstanding John! I may have to add that to my project list. Thanks for posting.

John,

Way to go!  Your bowls and bowl press look fantastic.  I can see a larger bowl press in your future for when you start making those larger bowls.  Grin.gif   Looking forward to seeing the finished bowls.

Thanks Susie, it was your bowls that gave me the desire to give this a try. I'll see how these go and then start to experiment.

John,

Very pleased to see you making these bowls.  With your woodworking talents, I have no doubt that you are going to make many totally amazing bowls.  Also, with your stash of fine hardwoods - those future bowls are going to be extra special.  Where did you say that stash was again?  Grin.gif

Well I put my bowl on the lathe tonight to round it up and things were going well when all of a sudden it went into orbit.

ning-imag0056-32956-36.jpgI had it in my chuck and all of a sudden the bottom piece of wood just split and came apart. Oh well I will see if I can glue it back on and finish it out. If not, then I just move on to the next one.

ning-imag0057-32956-29.jpgI didn't see any cracks in the piece of wood prior to putting it on the lathe.

Oops.  Reminds me of my father in laws quote.  "I never made a mistake but I made an awful lot of kindling,"  Any part of it salvagable?

Sometimes the cracks or weak spots are hidden. I truly hope you salvage this piece. Although I am willing to bet we have all been there.

Ouch at least it was just the bowl that broke.

My wife said to go ahead and finish it, she likes bowls with cracks in them. Grin.gif

I am going to give it a try to see if I can finish it out. I'll post when I get it done.

Remember the cracks give it character!!

Man John, that's too bad, all that work! I looks like it was a clean break, maybe salvageable yes?

So, how far did it fly?

Well John fortunately it didn't fly too far. I was turning on a fairly slow speed so when it broke it mainly just came off and hit the ground. I did glue the piece back in since it was a clean break and will give it another try.

Thanks Pauline, you'll have to come down for a visit to get the clamp,Grin.gif

John,

Just clip the wings on that bowl and it should keep it on the lathe.  Grin.gif

John - I hate it when things come apart for no apparent reason.

Does this mean that you have "Designer Firewood" or can it be salvaged????
