June 10, 201214 yr Well guys the second glue up went well today I have a few photos in the can and will try to re size them and post them tonight. I do hope that some of you are reading this thread and that you can see why I do the things the way I do. I want you to know that after the glue up of the second top on bench one we planed the top on bench top one of the bench one set. I am pleased there are no gaps and the glue lines are non existent. I am so very happy that I have a perfect top and it is to die for . I think we were really stressing the little DeWalt 13 inch Planer to its limits but the job went really well The only big issue is the planer sits on top of my workmate 200 and with the 8 foot long 125 pound top the little plane got a little tippy I will be looking for a more stable weighted base that I can bolt the plane to so it doesn't t get tippy. the top was simply too big for me to do alone and for safety sake I will have a helper in the shop every time i do thisÂ
June 12, 201214 yr well guys no work today as the back is out of commission for a few days the planing of the top was a bit much for the delicate back. I am sorry I will njot be going as fast on this build as I would like but I need this to be right . I also need to be safe and the heavy duity pain meds will keep me away from the shop for safety reasons.

June 12, 201214 yr Hey lance, I have always wanted to invest in a Skill 100 for this exact purpose your talking, planing large areas without getting tippy. I love these old sought after planes, they are very popular with surfboard shapers because of their long base. June 12, 201214 yr Jason, great looking bench. That is a very nice project. One of these days I have got to build one. Thanks for sharing and posting it here. Jason Ingraham said: I just recently completed my first cradle to grave wood project and it happened to be a work bench. It's nothing fancy but it's mine and it's efficient!
June 12, 201214 yr Sorry about the back problem Lance. Hey while you are resting up, how about posting some pictures of the progress so far here. A picture is worth a thousand words they say.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
June 14, 201214 yr well guys I am back to my laptop again as my big box keeps alarming for no reason very frustrating here are a few shots of the bench as the work has progressed Thats me the dude left with jOHN Ormsby right striking the deal for..the wood. the rest is the building process from stickering the wood when we got home to the rough cut to the glue up. then the big glue up and the jointing to fit the top in the planer and them Planing to final thickness. The entire Process has been a lot of fun If my bad back will hold out I will get this done in the next few weeks. Remember I am building 3 benches and 2 big one small should be a lot of fun

June 14, 201214 yr it is the limit of the little Dewalt but it is is the Plane that could it never even complained at all
June 14, 201214 yr some how i missed this one the thickness should be as close to 3.5 inches on one and 4 inches on the other the reason i chose the maple is it is a good strong hard wood and will hold up to a pounding yet it is not awful to work like rock maple is and the price was good at 2.50 a board foot and that was a nice way to get it he didnt count the blems as footage very cool john is a great guy. Walter A said:OK, so what is your target finished thickness for the tops? Â And once again... Why "Silver Maple"?
June 15, 201214 yr What ??? July 11, 201213 yr Walter do you have any photos of your project Walter A said:I'm getting too old to dream of a Hardwood bench 3-4" thich longer than 5' and wider than 12".I snagged some nice doug fir at the yard the other day, my new top will be 3" x 12" x something like 66" on a Doug fir frame and Doug fir fronts and back boards. Â I'm making another bench from spruce/hemlock which will be more like 2-1/4" thck and 12" wide for maybe a dedicated sharpening bench and misc in the turning studio.I have found silver Maple to move way too much, but the way you are making yours, it should be a non issue.
July 12, 201213 yr cool do you have a design in mind or a plan you would like to share with the forumWalter A said:Lance The Dude Granum said:
