Desperately Seeking Thin Wood

That would be perfect.  I have to talk it out with the Moms involved.  I already know that one is not comfortable with the idea because it's an over night trip.  There wasn't enough time to explain to her that I would want parents to join us.  So, let's see were we end up by the end of our next project.

Sounds like a plan.

Custom dimensioned white oak?  I apologize, I speak "newbeese".  What exactly does that mean?  The "custom dimensioned".  I DO actually know what white oak is!  LOL

ahHA!  THAT is a question I've been meaning to ask!  I've seen that "4/4" label everywhere.  Other numbers as well.  What does that reference?

HEY!  Did you know that you can put photo albums up here?!?!?!  ::sound of crickets::

ahem... well, yes...  I didn't realize that until about 15 minutes ago.  I've been fiddeling around trying to figure out how to get the photos in a better place than on Facebook.  And, I DID!  So, please go and take a look!  I'm thinking that from y'all's point of view you might like some close up shots of the boxes?  I will work on that for the next class seeing as how I've managed to do this photo thing once, I might be able to do it twice.  No promises seeing as how past history has been that I DID figure out how to do it and immediately all the software changed and I COULDN'T do it twice...

Walter, thanks for explaining that!  I'll have to roll it around my brain a bit before I really understand it... it's math.  I'm adverse to math... challenged even.... SERIOUSLY challenged...  Meanwhile... what does "Skip dressed" mean?

Jo

Jo,

Skip planing is when the lumber is passed thru the planer just enough to remove the high spots on the rough sawn piece. This lumber does not have a completely smooth surface and will still have some saw marks from the mill.

So...  hmmmm...  I'm thinking that from a novice perspective, it's basically the same smoothness that you would have with the untreated lumber at Lowe's or Home Depot?

Presuming the answer is yes...  if you wanted to use it for one of these little box projects, would you need to hand plane it?  Or could you just start sanding it?

Speaking of sanding... the boxes we are doing say to use 5 different coarsnesses of sandpaper and finally use steel wool.  How many strokes (approximately) or passes should one make before moving to the next surface?

That's a no go for us.  We are teaching little guys the absolute basics.  Did you read the opening entry of this thread?  There are the details (LOL  including a pretty good picture of just how little I KNEW on the topic).  Our youngest in the first class was only 6 years old!  He was a pretty impressive little guy too!

Jo,

How was the Class?

Project #2 wood made it on time............

How was the class?  As far as the wood is concerned, it was AWESOME!!!!

As far as bad behaviour from one of the children...  MINE no less....  far less than awesome.  =o(  It's been an insane week, I showed up for a Tuesday appointment on Wednesday...  forgot a couple other appointments all together...  AND, I DO have pictures....  but... remember that 2 times isn't a charm rule?    Well.... I went edit the photos in iPhoto and the edit screen was black.  As far as I can figure out it's a problem with the OS X, a corrupted version.  Haven't been able to figure out how to fix it.

Calgon has left the station without me....

There must be something in the air...  ANYway, this week was almost as traumatic as last week.  The only difference was that now, I am part of the class.  I suppose this is a good thing, it helps Mike maintain control a bit better.  But I do see that he needs my help to get things a bit better organized.

But, that is for next week.  This week... well, let's just say that it was injury central.  First off, I stabbed myself, in the hand, with a pencil.  Seriously?  A pencil?  ::sigh::  Yes, seriously, but let's move on shall we?

Next thing a kid was stung or perhaps bitten by a wasp in the back of the neck.  A trip to the house, a dab of alcohol, call to mom, ice pack, and things seem to be a bit better.  I leave this child in the house to rest and go back to the shed because I'm needed to cut and load the sanding blocks.  We MUST get additional sanding blocks!  Sharing just 2 between all 7 kids (we lost 3 after the last box but only got 2 new ones, we are looking for an additional student.) is not enough.

SCREAM!!!  CRYING!!!!  The littlest fellow was stung by a bee right in the embarrassing finger!  Off to the house!  More alcohol!  A bandage!  Fortunately his mom is here and helping out.  This woman is AWESOME!  Calm as a rock and VERY helpful!  At first he didn't want to go back to the shed, and really, who can blame him?  But we all went back out and thankfully, there were no more injuries.

I had EVERY intention of taking out my camera, BUT as soon as I got out there I was put to work getting stuff, helping with sanding, fussing an noisy boys, etc.  As it turns out, my "Rock Mom" was taking pics!!!  I have begged her to put them online for me!  I'll get in touch with her later to bug her about it.

It has been one thing after another over the last week.  I showed up for a Tuesday appointment last week and was stunned to be told, "Today is Wednesday."  Well, at least the boys are learning an appropriate song in chorus:

Not the preacher, not the teacher,

But it's me O Lord.

Standing in the need of prayer!

YES!!!  That is MY song for the month!

Joe R.,  I know I am replying to a thread that is 1 -1/2 years old.  Do you still need thin wood?  If so, you might check out Anchor hardwoods in Wilmington NC.   I've found thin hardwoods there.  They have a wide selection.  http://anchorhardwoods.com/
