July 28, 201213 yr Author Mebbe by the time those projects roll around I'll have enough smarts to figure it out myself? One can always hope! Jo
July 28, 201213 yr Ok did some figures below for enough to cover 8 boxes of project #4 ( double check me) Now that the Olympics is over for the evening I'm heading to the shop to plane this down to thickness and (also needs cut to widths?) Thickness 5/8" roughly 24.5 ft 3/8" roughly 14.5 ft 1/4" roughly 14.5 ft If I use 8" wide boards 27 1/2" length will cover. Â If you can substitute Cypress for the Pine in Project #2 I could possibly cover that one also? I do not run pine through my planer or table saw...
July 29, 201213 yr Author Really? Why won't you run pine through that equipment? Is it sap? Cypress would be lovely! I don't mind the substitute at all... but now my curiosity is up... Bet I won't sleep a wink all night!!! LOL I'm a math disabled. Seriously math disabled. I use Saxon math for my boys not just because it's one of the best curriculum's out there, but also because it literally tells me word for word what to say and how to say it. Jo
July 29, 201213 yr Sap is the answer..  Jo.R we're just a few of many coming off some dip who bled us....... I offered a difference. lets keep it that way.... Building for the Kids I'm In Cypress over Pine (Great) I'm covering #2 by September? (REMEBER BOYS THERE IS A DEADLINE FOR A TIME)  Say Hi to Lance! DFWDV Jo R. said: Really? Why won't you run pine through that equipment? Is it sap? Cypress would be lovely! I don't mind the substitute at all... but now my curiosity is up... Bet I won't sleep a wink all night!!! LOL I'm a math disabled. Seriously math disabled. I use Saxon math for my boys not just because it's one of the best curriculum's out there, but also because it literally tells me word for word what to say and how to say it. Jo
July 29, 201213 yr Author HA! I'm thinker than I smarted I looked! I DIDN'T sleep last night and I WAS wondering about that!I heard about the "bad" guy. We get a lot of that on our gardening forum I fear. I never ask money for seed. We are a wee bit on the poor side ourselves, though I must say that because we grow a LOT of our own food we are doing much better that a lot of folks with better incomes. We started harvesting some of our feed corn today to set aside to dry down for next years seed crop. First a wax corn good for both human and animal food, next will be "Cherokee Squaw" which is a flour corn, and HOPEFULLY we'll get a little bit of popcorn. It's kinda overrun by glyphosate resistant weeds, but still, one lives in hope. The glyphosate resistant weeds are interesting in and of themselves. One of the worst is "Palmer Amaranth". It's as tall as the corn. HOWEVER, the leaves and stems are edible and the seed heads are an edible grain. I sometimes dream that I'm skipping through the farmers field shaking the amaranth seeds all over his GMO soy... That's me being naughty.ANYway... I do my best to share everything that God gives me. Little by little I'm seeing how he returns the the "bread on every wave". We will be shown how to bless you all with much more than just photos. OH! Yes! The "Old-Cypress Box" project has it's first class October 3, 2012. Can't wait to see the wood!Jo
July 29, 201213 yr Great job guys! !, 2, 3, and 4 are covered. Any takers for project #5?Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
July 31, 201213 yr Author UPDATE: Yesterday I FINALLY received a response from one of the lumber stores I had contacted prior to being led to this site. The Hardwood Store of North Carolina. I responded that I had already located most of the lumber for the class series but that we were hoping that it would be enough of a success that we could look forward to another series in which we could apply to her for supplies.Well, we chatted back and forth for a bit and she has invited our class to come visit and get a tour! They are in the north western part of the state, a good 5 plus hour drive from us. I asked if there were accommodations available and maybe another place or two we could visit to make the trip more gas worthy. We are planning to make the trip as the final "round-up" of the classes sometime in March.I think some of y'all must be praying for us! I look forward to hearing about some of the blessings you receive thanks to helping us and our prayers for you.Jo

August 5, 201213 yr Author Ron, you were gone by the time I got back to my computer. Sorry about that. Lew, you are so SO awesome! Thank you very much. We are getting more and more excited about our upcoming challenge! We received Ron's package yesterday. If you've been following my conversations, you know that, as a family, we have JUST learned how to use a hand plane. I made the guys string and snap a gallon of green beans before being allowed to open the package. As we opened the box and were admiring the lustrous beauty of the smooth and beautifully worked cherry, Tommy (10 years old and with a lot more enthusiasm than knowledge) grabbed up one of the wide pieces and headed off to plane it! LOLOLOL FORTUNATELY, we were able to disabuse him of the notion that he needed to further plane ANY of the wood in the package! Update on the class! The notice has been published and thus far we have 2 definite students (ages 12 and 14) and one maybe student (age 8). Please keep us lifted in prayer that we prepare our minds and our "class rooms" so to be efficient and effective teachers and examples of Godly people.  Mike Jo Robby Tommy (psst, I'm the cute one! LOLOLOL) Jo
August 5, 201213 yr Author Splated Hard Maple??? OooOoo that DOES sound exotic! I can hardly wait to see it! I have to tell you, because you will appreciate the humor, Mike made me an "Old Pine Box" for my Christmas present. Interestingly, the "pine" he used has an amazing genetic similarity to cherry. HAHAHA I LOVE the results anyway you look at it.We are so SO grateful for all your blessings!Jo
August 5, 201213 yr Jo, help me out. Are all of the projects covered except Project #5?Ron DudelstonSite HostAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
August 5, 201213 yr Author Yep, all but #5. But I was pondering that.... You recall (I'm hoping I'm recalling that I DID tell you this) that I FINALLY received a response from one of my inquiries to various wood suppliers? I got into a conversation with her and she has invited the class up for a visit and she's even willing to arrange some other activities in the area as well as accommodations because it's several hours from here.At first I was thinking that it would be good trip for after the series. However, this morning it occurred to me that an even better idea would be to make the trip AFTER the 4th box, THEN, make that our FIRST shopping trip and purchase our materials there. I never even knew such shops existed much less been inside of one. ALSO, since you all are now instrumental and integral parts to this particular teaching experience, I would highly value your thoughts here. I can't help but be convinced that God is leading me through all of you. So please, tell me how you are feeling about all of this about now.Jo
August 5, 201213 yr By that point, the kids will have some experience under their belt. Having visited a "brick and mortar" store will give them the opportunity to see an even greater variety of woods. I suspect, project #5 could be made from any kind of wood so having the kids select their own variety (within cost restrictions) would give them additional ownership in their project- not to mention an additional individual "uniqueness" to their project.Jo R. said:Yep, all but #5.
August 6, 201213 yr Author Gentlemen, your seeds of blessing have taken root and are sprouting joyously! I have 4 families with 6 little boys between them who are requesting to attend our first series of classes. I AM telling them that SOMEone needs to help me out with the pictures! I am THRILLED to pieces! Mike is a little bit nervous. PLEASE hold him up in prayer! With God's help through you guys, this little program is going to produce blessings without measure. I feel it in my bones!Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!Jo
August 22, 201213 yr Author HEY! Just want to give you a little update on the status of the class. We are actually doing 2 classes, Mike will be teaching the carpentry class, but I'll be teaching a knitting class as well. Getting ready is a challenge to say the VERY least! We have 5 students for the carpentry class. We lost one little guy because mom felt that she wouldn't be able to meet the time/energy requirements. She has 2 younger children as well and I can understand her sense of being overwhelmed at the moment. She'll get over it.I have asked for a volunteer photographer and one has stepped up, so get ready! Pictures will be forthcoming! Our class schedule for project 1 is going to be September 5, 12, 19, & 26 - 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.I ALSO want you to know that thanks to you, I am getting ready to attempt my own, very first, wood working project. I'm making a worktable to use for all the inside/outside stuff that goes on around here. Eggs, produce, etc that now lands on the floor, storage for 50 lb sacks of flour and 25 lb sacks of sugar, and a "hiding place" for bottles of emergency water. Pray for my fingers because after I post this, I'm going to use the chop saw to cut the legs. WOO HOO! Jo
