Friday, October 12, What's on your woodworking agend this weekend?

Featured Replies

After a wonderful vacation to Indiana and a great visit with Ron and Dorthy we are back home and in the shop.

My youngest son and I have been working on a couple of Big Green Egg tables for a couple of clients. Teaching my son to use the equipment in my shop. He is doing great as I expected, but you know I am just anal about how my tools are used.

I'll post some pictures later as we just about have the table finished.

So what are you working on this weekend. We at TPW are always interested in your projects. How about sharing with us whT you are doing and pictures are great!

Well, for the last week and a half I have been working on building a new storage box for the side of the house. I had to move my wife's shed that she keeps her teaching stuff in as well as organize some stuff on the side of the house. After looking at it all sitting out there, I had to make the storage box to make things look nicer as well as keep the stuff out of the elements as this is on the west side and gets a lot of direct sun. What started out as basically a platform to sit stuff on to keep it off the concrete expanded into this 6.5'x2.5'x4' beast made from three 4'x8' sheets of Home Depot siding, a sheet of exterior plywood, a few pressure treated 2x4's, some standard 2x3's and some facia trim. I had a gallon of Kilz primer and an 5 gallon bucket of paint that been sitting in the shed for a number of years which was still decent so I had it shaken up at HD. Total cost was about $150. It ain't pretty (or plumb, square and level) but it works.

As for what is on my bench for this weekend....nothing now. Tami and I are getting away for a few days up to Mammoth, CA in the Sierra-Nevada mountains to spend some R&R time hiking some trails and shooting some photos of fall colors nad just plain relaxing. We got a condo for the week so we will have it for 4 days and my son and daughter-in-law will have it the other 3 days. According to the weather report for the next week it should be pretty much clear with no rain/snow in the forecast with temps down in the 30's at night and up into the mid 60's to mid 70's during the day. It will be nice to wear long pants and long sleeves again since we have had such a hot summer here.

Charles, that's a sweet looking bowl.

Allen, your utility box looks great. Hope you really enjoy your R&R.

John, What are Big Green Egg tables? I know what the Big Green Egg is, but not the tables.

My wife has been hinting that I might want to start educating our boys (age 32) about my tools. I agree. I'd hate to see them just sold off because of not knowing how to use them. The Shopsmith alone will take a few days to understand.

This weekend will be dedicated to finishing up a Shopsmith specific thickness sander project that I started because My router lift broke just as I was about to start box joints for the briefcase project. Now I know, most of you guys and gals (gals especially) can multitask and switch gears effortlessly. Not me. When the lift broke, it stopped the project entirely because those joints were the next step. Past experience has taught me that If I skip over a step and then go back, it never turns out good.

Hopefully the lift gears get here soon, or I'm gonna forget where I was!

The kitchen cabinets are on hold for a few days while I build an Advent wreath stand for church.  Pictures will be coming.

Gene, the big green egg tables are just tables with a hole cut in the top for the big green egg ceramic smokes to sit in. The bottom shelf holds the egg and the top part is above the table. It gives you cooking room and preparation space. We are making these out of Cedar. I'll post pictures tomorrow afternoon.

Charles is it a bowl or plate? Either way it looks great. Nice grain pattern.

Very nice storage box Allen. I need to do that so bad. I keep thinking my neighbors may do it for me just so some of the stuff around the house doesn't show.

Hope you have a nice relaxing time. Let me recommend the Dudleston Bed and Breakfast in Indiana. It is excellent!

You guys have some serious projects scheduled for the weekend.

For me, it's relaxing in Varnell, GA at the Prater's Mill Festival.  Just sittin around and peddling away all weekend (provided the saw lasts that long).  More later on progress.

Thanks gene,

John It could be either a deep plate or a shallow bowl. The dimensions are a bit hard to read due to being on the lathe still but pretty much 5 7/8x1" with most of that thickness cut out. this was actually thought of because my family actually had some. They were made from white plastic (early to mid 80s). We used to feed the kids lunch on them quite a lot. Too small to be a plate and too big/deep to be considered a saucer but just right for cake & ice cream and kids lunches :)

John,

I'm doing your favorite thing to do...................................................

Drywall.

Yuk! I hate drywall and plumbing. Both of them cause more problems every time you touch them.

I've done a lot of both.Dry wall isn't too bad. After trying every method known to man, I finally got the hang of cutting out for outlets and switches. Texture or plaster covers a lot of mistakes. So do over sized covers. But, plumbing and I just don't get along. If it has fluid or current in it, I'm better off leaving it alone.

Working on a set of walnut trivets. Smallest 7 1/2 ", medium 8 1/2" and largest  9 1/2 inches at widest points.  Got the wood planed and outside edges cut out.  Hope to get all the inside cuts done with weekend.  :)
