November 9, 201213 yr Veterans Day weekend for some will be a long weekend. A time to remember those that have served this great country and many that gave their all to protect the everyday freedom we so enjoy. Please take some time this weekend to express your thanks to those that have and are currently serving in our military. Is this a great country or what? I am sitting here this morning in Pigeon Forge, TN. enjoying a cafe mocha before heading out to the Workshop Tools store. One last run through to pick up a few items before we get on the road and head for Alabama. I am looking forward to some time in the shop this weekend to catch up on a few projects and to get a few new ones underway. I will be working on porch swings and cedar chest this weekend as well as getting some cedar ready for a cedar chest to ship out in a couple of weeks. Monday will be a day off from the office so I hope the extra time will allow me to catch up a bit. So what are your plans this Veterans Day weekend? Will you get anytime in your shop, home improvement, HDL, Christmas projects, or some travel and R&R? And of course some time put to remember our veterans! Share with us here at TPW your plans and pictures of your projects as the come together. Have a great weekend and check in Sunday to see the winners of our 1st Annual Wood Turning Contest! November 9, 201213 yr My lift parts finally arrived and got them installed. So, the box joints are made and the dadoes for the case sides are cut. The substrate and mesquite veneer has been sized. So, this weekend I'll be gluing the veneer and routing the veneered substrate to fit in the dadoes. Hopefully, it will be ready to cut apart on Monday. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
November 9, 201213 yr I'm taking a bit of a break this weekend from the kitchen re-build because counter top won't be here until Wednesday. Tomorrow we're taking all 5 grandkids on our annual Toys R Us list making trip. We spend the day letting them make their wish lists and then we all seven head to Steak N Shake for Lunch. Its a fun but exhausting time and we do it every year ust before Thanksgiving. Since we're headed for Disney World at the end of the month we had to do it early.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks

November 10, 201213 yr  I am still fighting flu symptoms, but am working on a miniature bed for my granddaughter. I'll post a picture sometime. Last year we went to Applebees for the free Veterans meal. I  must say it was packed all day. They had extra help and those people treated each and every vet with the utmost courtesy. I was thrilled to see a WWII army full bird come in wearing his full dress uniform.  He got out of his wheel chair at the door and wouldn't let his family help as he walked in. All the vets and their families insisted he go ahead and they took him to the head of the list . I did get to shake his hand and wish him well. I was so impressed at how he held himself and presented his uniform, yes he did get a salute from me as he passed.

November 11, 201213 yr The Mesquite veneer that will be applied to the sides of my son's briefcase is 5/32 thick. My intention has always been to mill a 3" square of walnut, border it with 5/32X5/32 strips of maple and cut out my son's initials and fill the cut out with turquoise, then set it in an upper corner of the case side. Yesterday I milled the square of walnut and the maple bordering strips and applied the initials pattern to the walnut. Drilled the access holes and set up my Delta scroll saw for the cuts. We're talking about 4 hours of work to that point. Yeah, I know, I'm slow. Threaded the ultra thin, 28 tooth blade through the first hole and began the cut. Within the first 1/4" of cutting, a ragged piece about 1/4X3/8 blew out of the top side. I immediately assumed the marqueteer's prayer stance (on hands an knees on the floor, head down and cocked to the side) but after several minutes of searching, my prayers went unanswered and the piece did not appear. I wish there was such a thing as a wood magnet. So, the next few hours were spent selecting a sound piece (I hope), resawing, planing and sanding another square of walnut. Today, I'll tape it up and try again. If this one is unsuccessful, I guess my son will just have to find another way to keep track of his brief case among all the others at the shooting range. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.'
