November 24, 201213 yr My ol bench is outdated, and subpar for the type of work I do anymore. When I built my bench over 10 years ago, I was a caseworks guy. I built lots of cabinets, cut lots of ply, and all my work was machined. Here is the bench I have currently. This is the rear of the bench, I typically work on the opposite side where you see the palm sander lying. That is where I have the underside doors as well that access the below area where my power tools are stored, of which I might add I hardly ever use anymore!!! You can see when I built the bench, that surface area was important to me at the time, I needed the real estate for assembling panels and cases, and this bench also serves as an out feed table in my little shop. So this is the only place a bench will fit in this shop. I also have my vise on the wrong side, when I installed it I was not hand planing any of my work, now I am. The vise is completely on the wrong side now. I need a bench that is friendly to hand work now. I need a tail vise, a sliding deadman and leg vise, and dogs, and storage underneath. The Roubo design would work, I could incorporate that but I need the storage underneath as well which the Roubo does not traditionally have. The bench of my dreams that I am looking at is the one pictured below. It is a bench typically built by the Shakers, plenty of real estate top side and plenty of storage below. It has the tail vise and leg vise with deadman, this one is found at the Stuart C Blanchard site, a great place to look around and have fun with. This bench will be my 2013 goal. I will collect the materials piece by piece, to purchase it all at the same time would be completely cost prohibitive. But hopefully by the end of 2013 I'll have a nice blog about building a bench like the one above. I am excited for the prospect of making this. And I think it will fit my woodworking style more closely to how I work today. Thanks for reading and bearing with my rambling. November 24, 201213 yr That is a fine looking bench. Being that I have visited your shop, that would work out well with your layout. I really need to make a new bench as well, but since I have to have everything mobile it makes things more of a challenge. Of course all of those other pesky projects that keep coming up push back the time frame for making a new benchAllen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. November 24, 201213 yr Author I think making a new bench is the same for most of us Allen, we just keep putting it off. It is one of those things that we just take for granted, yet spend so little time thinking about? I need to just allot some time for it, and do it.Allen Worsham said:That is a fine looking bench.
