December 7, 201213 yr December 7th, a day we will all remember. A day to stop and remember all those that answered the call of service and for some gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Many of them caught in the surprise attach and had no idea what was happening.Take a moment today and give thanks to those that gave it all for this great nation! So tonight is the last of the First Friday Craft Shows for me. This bring to end another year and for the most part it has been a good year. Sales have been less than last year but the crowds have been up. I think the economy is really taking a toll on shoppers even if they do like to buy hand made items. But we are will start in the next few weeks putting together the calendar for next year's shows and see where it takes us.I finished up a couple of bread boards last night and a small cutting board. I also got three pens turned and need one more to have my ten finished to send off for Turn for TroopslIn January there will be a Wood Turning Symposium in Nashville, TN. I will post more about it later, but if you Google Nashville Wood Turning Symposium you will find all the information about it. I try to attend each year and am planing on being there this year. The local Woodcraft store is a big sponsor of this event and there will be some unbelievable pieces shown and displayed there. A nice following of vendors will also be there. Easy Wood Tools is always there demonstrating their tools. As a matter of fact, that is where I purchased my first EWT. Great folks and they stand behind the product and you get to meet the person that makes them right there. So what's on your agenda as we are making this run down to Christmas and the end of the year? Will you be in the shop or the kitchen, woodworking, home improvement, HDL (last minute), are enjoying some of the fine baked things that just seem to show up in the kitchen? We here at TPW are always interested in what you are working on so please share your weekend plans and projects with us. We love to see pictures so please post pictures of your work.Have a great woodworking weekend!John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
December 7, 201213 yr Thanks for asking, John. Â My web site has been busy even though I have a sign there that states that orders after December 1st are NOT guaranteed for Christmas delivery. Â More maps to make so that will take most of the weekend. Â I have also started on my next big clock as well as special stuff for family. Â Guess making sawdust never stops for us, eh?Fredaka Pop's Shopwww.pops-shop.comEX-21 (Presently on the floor. Using my 6-year old 788 ! ! ! ! !'Soooooo many patterns - sooooo little time'
December 7, 201213 yr Most excellent post John!!!!That is really cool about the Wood Turners Symposium. I hope you get to see the Jackson family there of EWT's. Maybe you could say howdy on behalf of The Patriot Woodworker!!! Man we really need some t-shirts and hats! This weekend I'll be applying BLO to the maple settee, I stained it yesterday and we are starting the finishing process now. I hope to have it at the customers home before Christmas. We'll see how the weather holds up for finishing though.I'll try to get some pics up today. The staining turned out really nice, the dark aged wood and the new wood really evened up in tone, I am happy for that, I was sweating that a little.John and Fred, good luck in your future shows, that's a lot of work to keep those items in supply. My hat off to ya guys!!!John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
December 7, 201213 yr I have a "Tea Box" prototype on the bench waiting for the last coat of poly to dry before the final assembly. It is made out of scrap red oak that was in the lumber bin and I will be doing a few tweaks and make about 3-5 more for gifts out of maple or other wood hardwood. I will post some pics later of it. I also picked up an old rocking chair from my neighbor's yard sale this morning for $10 as I was heading out to breakfast. It was made by a friend of their's Grandfather and is solid oak and will fit into my A&C/Craftman/Southwest style. It is well built and in good condition, but needs to be refinished and new upholstery on the seat and back. I will post some pics later on that as well.Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. Vernon McGee
December 7, 201213 yr Pearl Harbor is on Phyl and my minds, today. Putting next to last coat of finish on the case. Hopefully, by Sunday, the hardware can be installed and the lining fitted. No football. As AZ Cardinal fans, we are too disgusted to watch. Clean the shop and put away the tools. Raid the stash for oak for other son's tall gun case. It's all stickered under a tarp. It was hauled in from TN summer before last. 500 bf. +/-  Mixture of oak, walnut, cherry and hickory. All rough 5/4. Lots of planer work. But, that's next week.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
December 7, 201213 yr Picked up the red oak yesterday for my wife's quilt rack. Now just trying to figure out how to modify the plans & layout for mortise & tenon joints in the top side rails instead of lap joints. Â www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
December 7, 201213 yr It's also my son's birthday...he's 45 today. Geez, that makes me ....really old, I guess. Anyway, trying to finish a set of "ladder shelves" for my neighbor. These weren't too hard but some of the angles you have to cut really present a challenge. Don't think I'll make any more of these.
December 7, 201213 yr Last night I got an email from a long time customer of mine and wanted to know hwther tI could have 2 pocket watch cases made and delived to California by Christmas. Since he has been a great customer, I'm working on pocket watch cases today. In between time, I'm working of small kitchen cabinet items like a valance, a shelf and making trim. Next week will be devoted to making stock. I'm fully out of everything and its hard to make money when you have no stock on hand.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks

December 7, 201213 yr Sounds like you are already well into planning the rest of the year out John. I have one more handle to finish up for the two fire starters that were ordered, Then I have to get them off to WoodCraft for engraving, and get them back here in time to get the components in, so that I can send them off to the customer. I then have 2 bottle stoppers to make for another client, and then need to send off items already made for my sister this year. So I will certainly have enough to keep me busy but not so much to wear me out. If I get those done, then I'll make a few things that I need for the Etsy listings. eBay really isn't paying off enough to keep it going next year, so I will likely close that option down and just list through Etsy from then on. Fire starter with handle in place. The handles will be sent by Themselves to get engraved So what is everyone else doing this weekend? December 7, 201213 yr Thanks Ron. It's not the strength I'm worried about. I'm wanting to change the appearance to a more Mission style but keep the slope of the top side rails along with adding square pins for the tenons.Ron Dudelston said:Mike Dillen said:Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
December 7, 201213 yr Looking good Charles. Not to take business away from Woodcraft but you may locate a locale business that does laser engraving for trophy's. You will save time and shipping cost. Last week I was looking for guitar pick guard material for accent rings for pens and found an engraving shop that had what I needed and found they can also engrave wood, metal, acrylic etc and it comes out just awesome.Charles Nicholls said: Sounds like you are already well into planning the rest of the year out John. December 7, 201213 yr Author Mike that is a great suggestion on the engraving. I will check with a local place here also. Good tip.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
December 7, 201213 yr John I've had ink pens engraved at local engravers in the past and have found them to produce high quality work at very reasonable prices. Especially logos that would be impossible without computerized laser engraving.www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
December 7, 201213 yr Yea Thanks Mike, i actually did check locally first and they do have a shop that will do it but they want 2x as much as WoodCraft does as far as actual engraving, but then the shipping charge on top of that, back and forth pretty much puts it even, I'll have to think on that. December 8, 201213 yr Well, since I'm restricted from my day job, due to health reasons, I think I'll try a handtool experiment.  Not allowed to work AT work, so I'll pass my forced "vacation" re-doing the Dungeon, er basement, into a small handtool workshop.    I have a small project in mind.   Involves cutting up some Walnut scrap, into a couple of handles for some planes.   Going to go Neanderthal as much as I can with this.    Don't have a Brace & Bit ( yet) so an electric drill will be Hand Held Tool.  I'll keep you all posted as i go....Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
