December 14, 201213 yr Two Turtle Doves on the second day of Christmas. 11 more days till Christmas, better get busy collecting all the items for your loved one.My day will start out with a visit to the jail this morning to see my youngest son. Probably will not have him home for Christmas this year. After that a trip to the pharmacist and that will take most of the Christmas money. Then a trip to the Dr. for a checkup today and probably more medicine. Not looking like much shop time this weekend for me.I did get in my new Timberwolf bandsaw belt and put in on last night and man does that blade cut so good. I finished up the oak support for the porch swing I was working on when the old blade broke and it when through that oak so fast it was unreal. 1/2" 3 TPI and it sold me on Timberwolf blades.Got started on a little shop clean up after the rush to finish all the items for the last couple of craft shows. As soon as I get cleaned up I will be back on other projects that are already coming in for the first of the year. Looks like it won't be much off time this year and I am so happy for that. Not sure what the rest of the weekend holds for me, I do know we have a Sunday School Christmas party one night and I have to work on a project at my real job all day tomorrow. So I need to hear about some great projects you all are working on to lift my spirits. You know we here at TPW love to see and hear about all of you projects. What are you plans, will you be gathering two turtle doves, working on last minute projects, decorating the tree, having a little egg nog, spending time in front of the fire just resting or doing those last minute HDL items?Share them with us and let us see some photos of your work. Now where can I find two turtle doves today?????John Moody Site Administrator John Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
December 14, 201213 yr Well,my wife's family always has a Christmas dinner and they fund it with a gift auction. Today I'll be finishing up a couple of cutting boards, a watch case and a folding table for the auction. Also today, I'm filling the grain on a burial flag case for my SIL's great uncle. He was a WWII vet and fought it out at the Battle of the Bulge. Quite an honor for me to have the opportunity to build this case. Sunday, Colts vs Texans.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
December 14, 201213 yr John - hate to hear you are in a little funk today. Â Sun is out bright and shiny here and might get to around 50F.Going to be busy in the shop this weekend - Promised too much stuff in time for Christmas delivery. Â I have two maps that need finishing, a six foot garden sign (that's length not height), a hair dryer/blower/accessory plaque, and three Appalachian Trail signs. Â Will post pix later when they get closer to being done. How about the rest of y'all. Â Which meaning of the word "SHOP" is on your agenda.Sawdust time - see yaFredaka Pop's Shopwww.pops-shop.com'Soooooo many patterns - sooooo little time'
December 14, 201213 yr Being the lazy, slothful s.o.b. that I am, the shop only gets cleaned between projects. Today is the day. The other "shopping" is done. Wife and I bought ourselves a bigger TV for the den. That was our gift to each other. Gifts for the grand kids and their parents had to be bought way early and sent to Okinawa. All done. Other son's and fiancee's gifts are finished and wrapped. Gotta go now and give the shop vac a work out. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' December 14, 201213 yr Got a Christmas party tonight at our house for my wife's "Autism Team" from her school so have a lot to do today to get the old homestead ready for the festivities. Sadly we will not have as many people there this year as in previous years as you got some people with their noses out of joint with each other so they don't want to come because someone else is there and they may have to (gasp!) act civil to them face to face. This really has disappointed my wife which makes me want to slap them upside the head and tell them to put on their big girl panties and deal with it! But my wife says I have to keep my mouth shut and not ruffle feathers or step on toes. Oh well, the joys of being a loving and supportive husband. I picked up some wood to make a few more of the tea boxes with a few changes from the prototype. So I should be able to start things up over the weekend. I got some maple and a nice piece of Jatoba for some contrast in the drawer fronts. I also have some walnut an purple heart as well sitting around which may find their way into the project, but we will see.Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. December 14, 201213 yr Got the cutting board/trivets cut and rough sanded. Wanted to steam bend some edge banding for a couple of them but cannot locate a reasonably priced (aka cheap) heat source. Edit: top rite 3- oiled boards one is all walnut; Center 2- trivets w/ poly; bottom left- 2 trivets no finish considering edge trim of maple. December 14, 201213 yr Lewis have you thought of using thin strips of contrasting woods and cold laminating them to make the edge banding? That way you wouldn't have to steam bend the band. Just a thought. I've seen people use a hot plate and a tea kettle for the heat source and a piece of PVC for the chamber and it works very well depending on the material and thickness.Lewis Kauffman said:Got the cutting board/trivets cut and rough sanded. December 14, 201213 yr Just found a hot plate on Craig's list. Waiting for a response. Thought about the cold bend on the round one but not sure about the oval one. Neither are very large and I think a 1/4 band would look nice. I'll post some pix.Mike Dillen said:Lewis have you thought of using thin strips of contrasting woods and cold laminating them to make the edge banding? December 14, 201213 yr Lew, I've bent 1/8X3" oak and walnut using a black piece of drain pipe (PVC). I capped off one end, filled it with water and Downy softener. Capped that end and set it in the sun for 6 hrs or so. Stuff was like spaghetti when I uncorked it.Of course, it was summer in Southern AZ, where it gets really hot. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' December 15, 201213 yr I wont be getting any wood work or painting done this week end. I would rather be in my shop than to do what I have to do the next couple of days.http://www.prchestnut.webs.com/

December 15, 201213 yr Lewis those look fantastic! I'm not sure I'd trim the round ones as they look absolutely beautiful. When I first made my tumbling block boards I thought of cutting them round but I couldn't bring myself to cutting them but I really like how yours turned out.Lewis Kauffman said: Got the cutting board/trivets cut and rough sanded. December 15, 201213 yr Author Awesome cutting boards Lew. Those will make someone really excited. I like the round ones. I have been thinking about doing that just can't stay caught up with the rectangle ones. Lewis Kauffman said: Got the cutting board/trivets cut and rough sanded. December 15, 201213 yr Thanks, Mike! Actually, the shape was out of necessity. I started laying out the blocks from the center and the farther out I went, the minor errors were magnified. Couldn't bring myself to scrap the board so this was the next best thing.Mike Dillen said:Lewis those look fantastic! I'm not sure I'd trim the round ones as they look absolutely beautiful.
