We are going to the lake for a picnic/family reunion tomorrow.  I gave everyone a YO-YO at the Christmas dinner but a few couldn't show up so I will be able to give them one if they show for the picnic.  I think I just need a few but one can never have too many YO-YOs.  The second photo are the brass axles that I make on a Unimat hobby lathe for them.  The aluminum sleeve act as a spacer for the halves and then the string rides on them too.  The black sex bolt on the is one of five I salvaged from something I took apart.  I did four with them and they worked well but can be expensive to buy.

Those are beautiful Dan, is it hard to get them balanced?

Nice work Dan, I admire your machining skill as well. It's gifts like these that really special, they make a persons day believe it or not, just a random, "Here ya go" type of gift that is hand made, I have a few gifts like this in our home and I treasure them more than many. Great work.

I don't even weigh them Steve.  I have found the important part is getting the halves the same size.  I make sure the blanks are the same thickness and turn them round with them both on the lathe at the same time.  I then remove them and shape them singly making sure they are the same and not changing the diameter.  To keep them from wobbling the hole for the axle has to be perfect straight through the blank.  If they are off even slightly you will know.

Can you turn several at a time and then separate them for final steps?

I forgot to tell you those are nice............great job!

Very Nice!!

I suppose you could if you had a long enough mandrel.  I don't support the end with the tail stock so I stay with one pair at a time.

Thanks for all the nice replies.  Everyone enjoyed the picnic and I am pretty sure my family all have a YO-YO now.
