Many may already be aware but, maybe some newbies to Walnut might find this helpful. Walnut shavings/dust should never be used around hooved animals, especially horses. It causes hoof rot...or that's the term horse people use. Have you ever noticed that no other plants or grasses grow under a live Walnut tree? It's a self preservation thing. Walnut trres are aggressively protective of their domain. I once visited a Walnut farm of 500 acres of cultivated Walnut trees. The owner said he never had to mow. Some of us two legged animals are also susceptible to the dust. Masks should be worn for sawing and sanding operations no matter the efficacy of your DC system. Walnut's aggressive tendencies can work in our favor, though. When the DC bag gets full after a lengthy session of planing, it gets spread around the outside perimeter of the shop. Sure does eliminate the need for the weed whacker. One more caution: DO NOT ADD IT TO YOUR POTTING SOIl!!! DAMHIK.

Oscillating Multi-Tools (OMTs)?
kmealy posted a topic in Machinery, Tools, Research, Reviews and Safety
I bought one of these (a Fein, because they still had the patent active) a number of years ago. I got it primarily because I was doing a lot of refinishing at the time and wanted something to sand out details and moldings. Well, it turned out to not be so great at that, so it's mostly sat in the tool bag, Today, I was trimming off some dowels with my flush cut hand saw, going slowly and I had a bunch to do, so I dragged out. Wow, I have to remember that more often. I guess I've always considered it really handy for a remodeler, trim carpenter, electrical rough-in, or a plumber, but not so much for a furniture maker like me If you have one, what all do you find it useful and handy for? ( as an aside, an Oh Carp! moment this morning, I went to swivel the dresser I'm working on and the side split at a weak point in the grain that I hadn't noticed. I guess I should be grateful in happened in the raw and not after I'd installed drawers and finished and delivered the thing. Glued the split and will add some pocket hole screws on the inside when the glue is dry. Will use the OMT to trim the dowel plugs on them.)- 32 replies

I have been playing around with the $1 solar sidewalk lights from the Dollar store again. If you remove all the stuff, metal top cover and stakes, you end up with only the collector, light defuser and LED. I cut off the extension that the stakes slide on. I built a lamp housing with a hole the same size in the top. A little Goop seals it and keeps it in place. This is a prototype, pending the approval of the CEO........wife. I have other ideas in the mix and will show that soon
