Lest anyone think I ignore the advice I get here, I've been sealing my wood chunks. This has turned out to be a fair amount of work. The chunks are so dirty I often couldn't tell which syrface was end grain. So I bought them into the heated section of my shop, let them sit a day to warm up, and then wire brushed the dirt off the end grain. Here is about 1/2 of them stacked on my assembly table and a makeshift table. I sit them with the end grain facing up so I could do that end, let it dry, and then flip them over and do the other end. The brushing process proved to be useful. I found 9 chucks that I deemed to not be worthy of further effort, they go to the burn pile. I found the instructions on the can of Anchorseal to be sparse regarding it's use, so I'm just planning on one coat on end of the chunk unless someone tells me otherwise.

A fellow cut down a chestnut tree, not knowing it was being watched and cared for by the University of Georgia. I was given some of the wood. By the time I got it, some of it had already developed cracks, so I wanted to seal it. I looked around and found a package of food canning wax, got out my blower heater, and melted it onto the ends. Took about 30 seconds, didn't need to melt a bunch of wax and dip the ends in it, and it seemed to do a good job. I had been putting a pan on a heater, melting it, and dipping it. Thought someone else might like the idea.
