Still had plenty of resawn leftovers...and...since the last mantel clock I had built was back in the 1980s....Hmmmm Nothing really wide enough? We have ways Glued up a couple of panels for the sides of the clock case... Most of the edges needed work with a plane... And flipped around a bit, until the grain tended to line up.. Close, but not quite. There WAS a beveled bit of fancy Ash... That I can use for the Top of the case...and add a fancy Finial in it's center? And a plain slab I can use for the base of the case.. That I can also bevel the top edges... Hmmm...A clock was bought at Hobby Lobby.. That sits into a 3" diameter hole.... Panel to house the clock needed to be a bit wider than just 2 boards...and a bit fancier grain... This is 4 boards...and adds up to 7" wide....case also will need a door in back of the case, to access the battery..so.. Just 3 Plain boards....still the width is 7"... Stay tuned...more to come..

Resaws.. Had been run through a Lunch Box Planer, to get them all about the same thickness...the fancy one stayed home...hand sawed apart, the planed and sanded flat.. Shudder to think what that Lunch Box would have done... Anyway...had to trim a few edges and widths.. May sort through this mess, and keep a couple items, for later...wound up with .. A "book" of long slats, and.. A "Book" of shorter slats...and a couple like this one.. The fancy pair? Well, they were trimmed up a bit... One on the left will become a couple drawer fronts...with the one on the right being the top of the case...to be built.. May use the live edges for something else? Unless I need a few more "parts"? Stay tuned....

Sorted through a stack of resawn scraps...found 4 that might just work to make a small box with. . One I could cut in half to make the box's ends.. Once I had planed it flat, that is... All 4 needed a little bit of plane work... was finally able to see what kind of a box these will make.. maybe try to get the grain to wave all the way around? been doing a lot of dovetails, lately..so..how about something a bit different? Involves using a chisel to lay the joints out.. A square to help carry the marks around to the other sides of a board.. Chisel is a 6mm wide mortise chisel...turns out, that the spacings will leave a double finger...maybe use that to saw a lid free from this box? Another layout tool.. Marking gauge..to mark out the baseline...set to the thickness of the boards in use...next...a marking knife to make a knife wall to start the chisel's chops.. Then, set one board aside, for now, set the other board a bit low in the vise... And grab a saw... And make a few cuts.. You can also see the knife wall. Ok, set up to do some chopping.. I have a 3/4" thick piece of plywood ( to save my bench from the chisels) and after deciding which will be the outside face...make a few chops..maybe 1/2 way down, leave a little front porch for support...then flip the board over... And complete the chops...careful, them little squares tend to fly straight back at you... Will use this to lay out the matching fingers... Right now, the Boss has errands she wants to run..NOW! Stay tuned for part 2...
