This is a rough turned River Red Gum bowl from Australia, a member of the eucalyptus family. I received the blank as a Christmas present last year. It turns easily, machines well, but tends to "fuzz up" and have minor tear out on end grain. Sharp tools seem to minimize the fuzz. It has a mild odor when cut that reminds me of the Elmer's paste (jar with a brush attached to the lid) we used in elementary school.
This particular sample was quarter-sawn and has lace "wing" curl in some areas. I think when finished there will be at least some chatoyance present.
Internal moisture was about 19%. I packed this up in a bag of it's own shavings to dry.
