A couple weeks ago we did a tool inventory at my day job and we got rid of a few things, or gave them away, I salvaged this beautiful Plumb right handed hatchet, just begging for a nice restoration. She's an old hatchet used by our surveyors over the last 40 years, still has some survey orange paint on the handle. The handle is not conducive for a carving hatchet, I may make one and fit it to the head. But I really see a lot of potential in this single bevel right handed hatchet, I love it.
I was working on the wiring in the shop at the ceiling level, on top of my 8' step ladder where I left my long time friend: a 20oz Plumb claw hammer. To shorten the story, I knocked the ladder with my rolling scaffold (I was on the floor) and knocked the hammer (which i had forgot was up there) down to the floor. It hit just the right way to split the handle lengthwise. Not to fear, buy another one. Ordered a repalcement from the 'zon, this one with a fiberglass handle to with stand those falls. Got here today....no where does it say where it was made, my other plumb hammers all say "made in USA". the replacement has definite signs of Asian manufacturer; really disappointed. Mean time the search for a replacmenet handle for my other one goes on, stores around here seem to no longer carry hammer handles.
On another site I float around in. There is a topic about the handle on a hatchet.....Got to thinking....yeah....I might have one of those strange tools.. No, it didn't come out of one of these tubs.. Lovely looking bunch? The one that is sitting in the Tool Tote at the moment, MIGHT be a bit better.. Used to be able to read the "gold" lettering on the wooden handle.....Official Scout Camp Axe Has a brass screw, takes a flat bladed screwdriver, to adjust the wedge for tightness. Why it has a nail puller notch, who knows.. The best part of the Hatchet? Is these two "logos" stamped into the side of the head. The rectangle one has "PLUMB" inside it. The other? Something about "Be Prepared" Other side is rather plain, though... MIGHT need a bit of stone work on the edge? Near as I can find out, this one was my Late FIL's. He never did throw anything away.. Whether to sharpen up and use ( have a Fiskars) or, just oil it up and display it...somewhere..
