And did NOT want to buy either a 3" Forstner Bit..nor a 3" hole saw..so.. Dug out 2 items...a 10" sweep brace.. Made by Peck, Stow, & Wilcox Co. (PEXTO) with a Samson chuck...about the largest chuck with 2 jaws... And out of a set of 4 Expansive Bits...this is the only one that can go out to 3" diameter... Had a high spot in the top of the bench..decided THAT would a spot for a test drive...so.. Had to crank that chuck almost as far opened as it could go, just to get the bit IN the chuck....this is one BIT bit.. Idea was to test out the snail ( sucks, too beat up, almost had to stand on it for it to bite..) enough that it would leave a "Ring" showing how big a hole it could make.. Just wanted it to score a line.. 3" exactly! As the hole this will drill is to fit the backside of this.. To where I can just push this in place, and NOT have it fall back out. Board for this hole? Currently IN the clamps, until tomorrow...has a few other things to happen first,,,before the hole gets drilled... Pays to have different ways of getting things done?

Just a look inside the Toy Box....focusing on just a few drills... Well, 4 out of 5 will work...Irwins Left to right...Stanley 14", an eggbeater, PEXTO Samson 12"...pewter strips in the handle, a 10" Keen Kutter...yet another eggbeater drill.. Hanging in front of the eggbeater..8" Stanley, then another fancy eggbeater ( drill bit selector in the handle) then a pair of 6" sweeps...and a few bevel gauges... Hanging on the door, with the hammers...that HUGE one is a Millers Falls No. 2-01...the gray one beside it is a Craftsman version of it...still has it's label Mystery Drill just keeps hanging around.. Have no clue...and for those fans of Buck Rogers.. Millers Falls No. 1950, with that RED tennite plastic handles ( and a counter-sink bit on board) While I am sure there may be a dozen more lurking about...this seem to stand out.. Rogues' Gallery?

A Village wide yard sale day was a bust..for me..the Boss found a few items.... Second try later in the day....one site had a few "water pump pliers" at a dollar each. Since I can never find mine WHEN I need them..bought three...and gave a couple to my Daughter, since she is the one that swipes mine, anyway.. Hit a few more places....not much...where do they find all those clothes, anyway.... Found a spot...had a shed full of tools.....must be paying for the shed with the prices he was asking....found a $2 Chisel hiding amongst the $10 ones.. It IS an 1-1/2" wide chisel...stamped DEFIANCE by STANLEY Made in USA Another mushroom to clean up...and find a handle for....also in that shack/shed was a bucket of braces...8 or so..all overpriced.. Still carrying around that chisel, walked out back, to a "yard sale" area the fellow has....old tools and hardware, just sitting around on tables....exposed to any weather that comes along.. Found this trying to hide in a shady spot... Handsome, ain't he? Gave it a good drink oil 3in1 oil in all the moving joints ( like the Tin Man?) and got things cleaned up.. Sanded the wooden handles, wire wheeled the metal areas....added a coat of stain to the dried out wood.. Looked just like a slightly larger one I had...the larger one is a 10"... "New one" is a Stanley No. 945, 8" Has Stanley stamped all over the place.. Even on the chuck. As for that chisel..ground the mushroom down a bit.. Shined things up a bit, to where the logo will show up....DEFIANCE by STANLEY No. 1251 Made in USA May take a bit of work, to get it cleaned up.. Look close at the edge...see it "frown" there is also a slight bevel there... And this side has a double bevel ( chin?) and you can see the frown better.. need a bucket of water, and a day at the grinder, maybe...and find a leather-hooped handle for it... Not a great day, but, not too bad? The brace? Cost me a whopping $4
