As to species: WALNUT! 

There are but four woods I use, generally. Walnut, White Oak, Red Oak and Mesquite. Oh, there's a few maple boards in the shed, too. Not my favorite wood. 

Mainly, cuz that's all I got. Any thing else I have to buy out. And, that means at least, a 200 mile trip. So, I make do.

The high boy is at home in my son's bedroom.

That is a great piece. I like the shallower drawer design. You must have a source for walnut. Don't think I have seen that much in one place for a while.

Thanks guys. That walnut was saved from becoming firewood. It was from a tree uprooted in a tornado in central IL. 

Dave, the finish was numerous coats of home brewed wipe on poly/Watco.

Magnificent piece,Gene. I sure like the paneled sides,a lot of work went into that. I bet that stays in the family for many generations. The crown molded top is my favorite way too, really sets off the top. The finish really accented that beautiful walnut
